It may be dirty. you can unscrew the valve and see if any dirt or sand is keeping it from sealing.

Compressor leaks after pressure is built up

The problem that you describe is more likely the check valve. Follow the air discharge tube from the pump to the tank. The brass or aluminum fitting at the tank is the checkvalve. Clean debris in valve or replace valve with generic. Should cost about 20 dollars. Make sure that the air discharge tube is clean of carbon deposits so that the new valve will fail. Good luck

The checkvalve for your compressor is part # cv221502aj and is available from www.toolpartsdirect.com or www.chpower.com. Air leaking thru head bolts can be fixed by snugging up the bolts, however if you would like to clean the valve plate and head of carbon, may as well install gasket set (part number for gasket set is vt470900aj). Be sure to clean the inside of the discharge tube because carbon buildup could dislodge and cause new check valve to leak. Many times old check valve leaks due to debris under seat. Try cleaning it first. Good luck with your repair.

Compressor won't restart when pressure gets low. How do I fix it?

The unloader is designed to release the pressure in the discharge tube after the unit reaches set pressure. The unloader is usually located within the pressure switch and is enabled with a small lever opening a valve (some look like tire stem). You can verify if it is working by cycling compressor and listening for release of air after unit reaches set pressure. Some compressors do not have a built-in unloader relying instead on loose fitting parts to bleed out air. On these units, air leaking back from the intank checkvalve will cause problem of loaded/backpressure and the motor cannot overcome. Easy to verify if checkvalve is leaking; with pressure in tank remove the discharge tube at the checkvalve and spray soapy water. Clean or replace this valve as needed. Good luck

Air leaking from tank back into compessor is indication that in-tank check valve is leaking. This condition will stress motor when trying to start. Test : With air in tank, unplug compressor from outlet and remove hose from compressor at checkvalve and test for leak (soapy water). If leaking drain air and remove checkvalve. Examine checkvalve for debris under seat (resurface seat or replace valve). Parts are at www.toolpartsdirect.com Good luck

When a compressor reaches set pressure, there should be a release of air from discharge hose thru the unloader. This release of air unloads the compressor head pressure. The unloader is usually located within the pressure switch. Easy to check. Follow discharge hose from compressor head to tank. There should be a brass/steel checkvalve at the tank. The checkvalve allows air to enter tank, however not allow air to be released back into discharge hose. If this valve is leaking, air will be released from the unloader constantly. Follow 1/4" tubing from checkvalve to unloader and listen for leaks. Repair as needed. If air is not leaking from checkvalve then check unloader mechanism with-in pressure switch. Parts are available at www.toolpartsdirect.com Good luck

I have a two cylinder singel stage pump. It pumps up and then blows bake at the regulator. Where the tube comes from the head to the regulator. I put a new regulator on the pump.

ok then now i understand the problem. it seems to me that the checkvalve is not closed after pumping checkvalve is placed between cilinder and tank. mostly a brass thing with small hose to the regulator and large screwcap. inside is spring and rubbervalve. clean seat. and valve, when worn out maybe turn valve upside down. BEFORE OPENING CHECKVALVE RELEASE PRESSURE. checkvalve makes pressure stay in tank in smal line blows of to start easier. and blows of cilinderhead, and tube to valve. cleaning is less work then reading tyis story. good luck.

Coleman Powermate Model Number BV6548049, pressure switch leak.

Usually, a leak at the pressure switch unloader valve is caused by the checkvalve in the tank. The unloader valve at the pressure switch bleeds out the air from discharge tube after compressor reaches set pressure. This only takes a few seconds. If air continues to leak then air is leaking back into the discharge tube past the tank checkvalve. Follow the air discharge line from the compressor to the brass valve at the tank. The brass valve is the checkvalve that holds the pressure in the tank. There are usually two connections at this valve. One is the unloader tube to the pressure switch. Simple test for leaking checkvalve, with pressure in tank unplug or switch off the compressor and remove the small unloader line at the checkvalve(brass valve) and look/listen for leak. If leaking, remove the checkvalve and examine seat/check for debris keeping the valve slightly open. If it cannot be cleaned, order generic replacement from www.grainger.com. It will cost less than the factory checkvalve. Just pay attention to the thread sizes for easy fit. Good Luck on your repair and email if you have questions.
