This set might or might not come on when plugged up.

The red led turns green when power button is pushed and will not

turn off when pushed again. It has come on by it's self while

    sitting here plugged up.

It will get worse and finally you will not be able to 'shock' it into working. The main power supply is failing and sometimes it happens backward from yours; stayed on OK but moved the set and it won't come back on now.
Switched mode power supplies are more efficient but less reliable than linear supplies of times past.
I think your supply is on a separate board and you may be able to buy, remove and replace yours once it finally wont come on either.

Solution1:
a)Inside the tv there are microswitch CH+- Vol +- power, menu: when the ones are faulty," tv tends to behave at its own", change them, of course before to buy'em, unsolder th'em and try with the remote, tv has to work with out'em.

Shut off itself

sounds like you might have an auto overvoltage shutdown circuit kicking in. The hivoltage goes to high and the monitoring circuit auto shuts down. More than likely trouble is in hivoltage circuitry. If you have a transformer that will allow you to bring up the set slowly without shutting down and you can look to see what's happening.
