Francis X1 leaks water from steam valve when valve is turned off

My Francis X1 Has made hundreds of fabulous lattes (3 -4 per day) but for the second time has slowly developed a "leak" from the steam valve. Whenever the machine is turned on it drips and spurts out the valve even though the steam valve knob is fully off. The problem is progressively getting worse and about 2 oz. of water is lost for each shot of espresso brewed. This same thing happened about 2 years ago and I sent the machine (directly) to the repair facility in Southern OR. I descale regularly and the repair facility told me I did not have a scale problem when it was fixed before, although they declined to say exactly what the problem had been. I really don't want to spend a couple hundred dollars to ship the machine and have it repaired again, but mostly I don't want to be without my machine. Any ideas?

Same thing here. No water loss other than when the valve is opened though. I think its a poor design.

SOURCE: Francis Francis! x1 leaking

Well, to state the obvious, you should call Francis! Francis! at 1-877-854-4141 and ship it to them for repair. It's unlikely you can perform a fix yourself. Have you tried opening the machine up? I got PDFs of diagrams and part lists, which I obtained by calling them at the number quoted above. Good luck! Stephen

Don't know how your controls are set, but you have two switches on the front and a knob on the right. The switch for the steamer (the right hand switch) should be off. The knob on the right should be turned clockwise to turn in off. Then no water or steam should come out of the steamer wand. If it does, the seal on the knob inside the machine is broken. It can be repaired but only if you're handy with a screwdriver (make sure if you take it apart you disconnect it from the mains).

The problem is with the two O ring which are on the steam knob srew. So you need to disasemble the steam knob srew by turning it all the way reverse. On the srew axis you will find two O rings which must replace. You can fint easy replacements O ring from DIY shop they usuly have O ring kits with diferent sizes so take one with youto match it with that of the shop.

Your machine have different small problems.
First the steam is not working since during descaling one small scale part blocked in one poind the pipe or valve so the water can not pass and create steam out.
The second problem you describe is that the thermostat which is located on the thermoblock-boiler is not working properly so it does not switch off heating thas you have overheating and thus the valve explosion when the pressure go very high. Also if you try to make a coffee with this very high pressure so very hight temperature then the coffe will burn so you will have atery coffee without cream.
So your machine need to desasembel and manual descale pipes and valves and also to replace the thermostat.
It worh it if you can do it your self or if you find a service that will not charge a lot since you mostly need labour and not parts.
Good luck and thank you for voding

Francis francis milk steamer not operating

Check the end/nozzle of the steam wand, if you open the wand and while getting nothing it is hot, then the nozzle is blocked use a paperclip to clear the hole at the end of tip. If you have done this already and still no steam then it is clogged where the steam valve connects to the boiler.

Leaking water from steamer

For the grouphead check the basket there might be a slight bump around the edge that is preventing it from making a good seal when it contacts the gasket in the head. If the Double works fine then the gasket is not the problem.
For the steam wand try flushing wand for 3 seconds just before steaming, if that does not help with the watery milk, then the boiler is not getting hot enough to produce steam.

Francis Francis X1

Some leaking from the group head of the machine is totally normal while the machine is heating. The reason for this is that the valve that sits above the shower screen is simply a spring and rubber ball. The spring expands, creating a seal with the rubber ball and the boiler, once the boiler reaches a specific temperature. Until the boiler temp is reached, leaking from the group head will occur.

Your thermostat has failed. The middle button is the pump. The bottom button is for the steam mode. If you are getting steam instead of hot water when using the pump, then the boiler is way too hot. Either adjust the thermostat or try descaling the boiler.
