Poter-Cable 135PSI Pancake Compressor

My compressor does not come on when the on/off switch is turned on. For whatever reason, it just stopped running. It is approximately two years old. Should I attempt repair or send it out or does anyone know what the problem might be?

135psi pan cake builds about 20 pounds then kicks out (actually blows electrical breaker) like faulting to a dead short. Re-set breaker and compressor will build another 20 pounds and repeat the same event. One can build 80 pounds or more pressure but not the way one might want to running and resetting a breaker every 20 pounds.

Have eliminated the power feed line, the switch relay, and the regulator. If power is applied direct to the moter it will run the same way suugesting the motor or dead shorting. Wghat can be done? What about the two cans and over load switch inside the moter cover end plate? Your help is appreciated as this is a fine compressor and pump and motor works freely, just dropping out after 20 pounds run generation and nothing seems hot to the touch or even warm.

Check the pressure switch, they can become stuck in the open position. You can jump it to see if it is functioning or use a multimeter if you have one. Assuming that you've oiled and taken care of it it is unlikely that it simly quit, but that could happen... check across the poles of the motor for continuity which will tell you if the electric motor is blown. ALso make sure the compresor is not seized...

How much more efficent is this than my 40 yr old janitrol 125000 btu beast

not knowing what you are replacing it with, it is hard to give a reasonable answer ( old sealed units against split system converter ac units )
However if you work along these lines, you will come to a logical decision
First off the old machines had the compressor operation tied to the thermostat setting so the compressor ran full blast until the room cooled to the set temperature. Then it stopped and remain stopped until the room heated up. At this point the compressor restarted and that is the point the the most power is consumed
again it runs full blast until the room again cools and switches off
So you can see that you have a varying room temperature and high energy consumption on start up
Now compare that to inverter units
The compressor is running all the time ( no high energy start ups every 10 minutes or so) but the compressor becomes less efficient as the room cools down
Still running at full rpms but the controls reduce the compressing action--less power to run the compressor--so there is a reduction in power used
The temperature variation is reduced because as the room warms a bit the compressor pumps a bit more gas and doesn't start at full load as per the old unit
Next , the latest units have better temperature / humidity recognition controls so they can be set at night so a room maintains an ambient temperature /humidity so that as the night gets cooler and the air drier you don't wake up freezing
It will even get to the point where you wonder if the unit is working
Lastly you can run the unit at a much higher setting ( 27 Degrees c instead of 24 or less and have the same comfort level as at 24-25 degrees c)
lastly warranty is for 2 years at best and parts will be available for the next 10 years against parts for your old unit

I have a Central Pneumatic 38898 pancake compressor that will not shut off when the pressure reaches pre-set PSI. I have replaced the pressure switch but to no avail...HELP!!

There must be a blockage on the fitting where the pressure switch goes in that stops the air pressure from reaching the regulator. Try taking the switch off and turn the compressor on and see if air comes out the hole

Porter cable pancake compressor will not shut off replaced manifold, still the same.

I would look at the pressure switch which shuts the electric off when the air pressure reaches its limit also check all wires going to and from this switch. Best checked with a multi-meter.

My 6 gallon porter cable compressor stop working, how can it be fixed?

Check the voltage at the pressure switch and be sure the connections that are there are tight. check the voltage to the motor. If you have voltage to the motor then replace the motor.

I was given a 3-HP HDC pancake compressor a few days ago and the man (he was throwing it away) said it worked although a bit slow to build up pressure and that it needed a new gasket. Is it worth keeping...

Hi app_3rp778
I would suggest that you replace the head gasket, it should not cost too much to replace it.
I would guess the gasket would be around $10-$15 usd
If you replace it yourself it would be very advantageous as the repair cost would only be the gasket.
If you take it to a repair shop, I would guess they would charge around $50-$60 usd for the repair of the compressor and replacement of the gasket
Do some research on the web for your parts or check out the webpage below.
Have the parts sent to your house...will be cheaper to take the part to the repair shop then to have them order it...they normally charge 200% on parts.
Also look at the following webpage for repair of the gasket and some more hints on how to repair a porter cable compressor pancake compressor, it is not your compressor but it will be somewhat like your compressors repair procedures.

Air Leak From Pump Head on Porter Cable C2001 Pancake Compressor

The real question is where exactly is the leak coming from. Compressors have a pressure release valve designed to let the pressure off of the compressor motor so it can start when there is pressure in the tank. This valve is often the culprit and fairly easy to replace. You can order it direct from porter-cable online. Just in case double check the drain petcock sometimes these get worn and won't close completely and can easily be over looked when trouble shooting.
