One thing to check and be sure of is that your printer cable (USB) is definately a USB 2.0 cable. Canon have an issue with their printers with scanners in that the data flow sometimes isn't sufficient when an older USB cable is used. The slightest drop of data on startup or during scanning will cause a stop.
Worth trying and has sometimes solved the problem for my customers.

SOURCE: "There is no Scanner selected,
How did you install the Printer? Did you install it using the CD or Did you download the driver from the Canon Website? Let me know.
Also try scanning from Paint or from any Photo editing program. I would also suggest you to try scanning from the "Printers and Faxes" (in windows xp) "Devices and Printers" (windows vista and 7), if it's driver is installed, it should also show up in the "My Computer" folder.
