Get inside the drive, and gain access to the laser. Your goal with be to make sure the laser optics are clear of lint and dust. I use a toothpick and some paper towel wrapped around the tip of the toothpick. I dampen the tip with Windex and swab the lens well, the put a dry piece wrapped on the toothpick to dry the lens. You may need a new drive. Lasers do burn out within a few years. Let me know if you need more.

Hi aek001, thank you for using fixya.

there is a strong possibility that either the lens or the drivers of the drive has been damaged.

you may get this isolated by getting the latest driver pack for your Inspiron 6000 which can be downloaded from Dell's website. better if you have your machine registered because you will have better flexibility on the downloads you need.

On the angle that the lens is damaged, there is a strong possibility that it is since the driver cannot read any CD that you put in it. you can have this isolated by forcing the CD to read an OS cd.

hope this helps

Are you able to read CD's and DVD's using the Optical Drive ?If yes, then it may be a problem with the lens in the drive. It can also be an issue with the software that you are using to burn Cd's ( like Nero ).If you are not able to Read and write Cd's or DVD's and the Optical drive isnot listed in " My Computer" then it can be either a driver issue or registry filters issue.Let me know abt this

My satellite l350d won't burn CDs

The problem is: your laptop cannot read the blank disk. The possible reason is, maybe your laptop doesn't have a burner installed to it, like Nero. You'll need to buy a burner for it, if there's some available! That's no big deal, Desktops also go through that. They just need a burner, and that's all! Hope this helped!

Toshiba satellite a65-s1762 dvd-ram drive problems

Take the laptop *and* your DVDs/CDs to a qualified technician.
It seems like the drive is "intermittently" failing, and needs to be replaced.

Only reads some disks.

Hi, if the PC's are older than 3 years or the cdrom drives are near it's end of life, it will make problems to read some CDR's. If you recorded the CD's you are trying to read, try recording at less than 4X speed.
Sometimes, even "original" or "silver" CD's will make problems because they are not recorded correctly at the factory.
If the problem is with a CDRW drive, it applies the same theory, the recording laser is damaged or used up. It will not record a legible CD or DVD even if the software says that the record operation ended successfully.

Cd burner

What programs can I use to burn or create CD's on my computer? If you're running version 10 or higher and have a CD/DVD burner drive installed in your computer you can create audio CDs using it.

Computer DVD Support
CH000885, CD or other disc tray does not close or opens by itself. CH000901, My CD or DVD is skipping. CH001014, Can a DVD burner also burn a CD?
What hardware do you recommend or what is the best? What type of burner, CD-ROM, computer, DVD, fan, hard disk drive, monitor, motherboard, mouse, printer, sound card, speakers, and/or video card does.

Computer CD-R help and technical information The CD-R drive does not actually create pits on the CD, instead the burner creates reflective sections on the CD causing the computer's CD-ROM laser to.

Good Luck, Read and follow instructions. Please dont for get to Vote/Thank You.

Reading Data CD's

Hmmm... were the cd's originally burned using that laptop? Or were they burned on a different pc?

It could be as simple as your cdrom doesnt like something about those cd's. Or it could be a flakey cdrom.

My suggestion, try reburning them to a different brand of disk using a different pc. Then see if your laptop will read them. If not, may need to replace the cdrom. Though it reads commercially manufactured cd's, if its flakey, it will have problems reading custom made cd's.

Other option, get a usb flash drive and copy those files from that cd, in a different pc, to the flash drive.

You don't need any special drivers or programs in order to copy mp3 files from a cd to your hard drive. Yet, you would need something in order to play them. Which media player does just fine.

Flakey cdrom or flakey cd's... hope this helps.

DVD drive cannot recognize DVD disk, but can read other CDs

I'm assuming you have tried a different dvd also and no joy, but it may need a lens clean or it is unable to read dvd anymore as the tracks are closer together than a cd and the alignment of the laser is faulty. Notebook roms are replaceable but only mainly from your notebook manufacturer. You could also use an external dvd writer via usb, although this then doesn't make your notebook as portable, if you need to read a dvd disc.

Problem with disc drive

You didn?t mention the type of disk (something you burned or bought) or the physical condition of the disks (brand new, some scratches or lots) but if they?re commercial CDs or DVDs and you can play them in another laptop or player you should be able to play them in your laptop consistently. About the only thing I would recommend doing to a new laptop drive still in warranty would be to clean the drive using a commercial CD cleaning disk. If you still have trouble reading commercial CDs that play in other devices I would contact the manufacturer?s technical support for repair.
