Hello, I recently had a Rinnai tankless water heater installed. The old water heater was in the garage. The new tankless heater is installed outside, and is about 25 feet away from where the old one...

I agree with you. The foam insulation should only be on the Hot Water side. The cold water side doesn't make any difference, as that temperature rarely changes in California.

Hope this helped you AK, thanks for choosing FixYa.

We have a brand new Rinnai gas heater, Avenger 25. The first two times we operated it, it was fine, but since then a code 13 comes up after 3-4 minutes and the heater turns off. Rinnai said we could...

These are the possible issues with the unit, based on the code list and description

Check that the gas is turned on at the water heater and gas meter. Check for obstructions in the flue outlet.
Ensure gas line, meter, and/or regulator is sized properly.
Ensure gas type and pressure is correct.
Bleed all air from gas lines.
Ensure proper Rinnai venting material was installed.
Ensure condensation collar was installed properly.
Ensure vent length is within limits.
Verify dip switches are set properly.
Ensure appliance is properly grounded.
Disconnect keypad.
Disconnect EZConnect™ or MSA controls to isolate the problem.
Check power supply for loose connections.
Check power supply for proper voltage and voltage drops.
Ensure flame rod wire is connected.
Check flame rod for carbon build-up.
Disconnect and re-connect all wiring harnesses on unit and PC board.
Check for DC shorts at components.
Check gas solenoid valves for open or short circuits.
Remove burner plate and inspect burner surface for condensation or debris.

Clean inlet water supply filter.
On new installations ensure hot and cold water lines are not reversed.
Check for bleed over. Isolate unit from building by turning off hot water line to building.
Isolate the circulating system if present. Open your pressure relief valve; if unit fires, there is bleed over in your plumbing.
Ensure you have at least the minimum flow rate required to fire unit.
Ensure turbine spins freely.
Measure the resistance of the water flow control sensor.
Check for DC shorts at components

My Rinnai heater starts then stops after 5 -10mins flashing 14.

14 is an error code alerting you that the unit is heating up too hot. Check the air filter and make sure it is clean. You may have to take the front panel off and inspect the burner area for any signs of overheating. Remove the trim panels closest to the wall and clean out any debris from behind the heater. Let us know next time what model you have. Good luck!

Sure is. You simply need to purchase a to 3/4" to 1/2" Male to female reducer. You didn't mention if your current gas piping is flexible copper, rigid black iron pipe or flexible stainless steel. In any event, get the one that matches your current gas piping. If all of your other gas appliances require an individual regulator, then you'll need one for the tankless water heater. If in doubt, contact your propane provider.

Hope this helped answer your question and provide a solution.

You are probably running a low flow shower head and have not had any maint. done on the unit. When the water flow is low and the unit is dirty it can't exchange enough heat to the water and this causes the heat exchanger to gradually increase in temp. The unit then shuts down to allow the heater to cool. This is an automatic reset high limit switch that will turn the burners back on automatically. This problem can be exasperated by 1/2 inch trunk lines. Call a hvac tech in your area to come and clean the unit. He should also be able to increase the draft inducer fan motor speed to allow more cooling of the heat exchanger.

Sorry to read about your problem, I hope this helps you out.

Ok your code 12 is a gas issue, or this listed below

Check that the gas is turned on at the water heater and gas meter. Check for obstructions in the flue outlet.
Ensure gas line, meter, and/or regulator is sized properly. Ensure gas type and pressure is correct. Bleed all air from gas lines. Ensure proper Rinnai venting material was installed. Ensure condensation collar was installed properly. Ensure vent length is within limits.
Verify dip switches are set properly. Ensure appliance is properly grounded. Disconnect keypad. Disconnect EZConnect or MSA controls to isolate the problem. Check power supply for loose connections.
Check power supply for proper voltage and voltage drops. Ensure flame rod wire is connected. Remove flame rod and check for carbon build-up; clean with sand paper or emery
cloth. Disconnect and reconnect all wiring harnesses on unit and PC board. Check all components for electrical short. Check gas solenoid valves for open or short circuits. Remove burner plate and inspect burner surface for condensation or debris.

your manometer levals should be around 3-4

if you are running other gas appliances, like pool heater

I would suggest that you turn temperature setting up to 140 degrees and see if this won't help you. Obviously with water temperature that high make sure no little ones are left unattendded. Thank you

Hi i have a rinni convector 516tr heater i put it on it switches off a few seconds later i think it has to do with the timers i have lost the book/

I am assuming this is a tankless heater. Are you turning the water on full throttle and is there full flow. First thing to check is the small filter screen on the inlet of the water heater. If the flow is reduced the water heat will not fire.

My Rinnai 606tr Silent Server continually shuts down and the number 12 appears on the display screen. What's up ?

I know that this is an old post but i had this same problem and i cant find a single answer to this problem anywhere on the net. Rinnai couldnt even give me an answer (let alone even call me back)

Well I figured it out. If you go onto Rinnai's website, you can download the manual, which has the codes and what they mean. Code 12 means Flame Failure. Still this didnt tell me enough. After taking the thing completely apart twice i finally figured out that the heater itself was perfectly fine.

The gas line was the problem. My gas line has a check valve on it right next to the heater. The check valve was not letting a consistent flow of gas to the heater because the heater was drawing too much gas at times, causing the check valve to start to close because it thought there was a leak (so to speak).

All i did was turn the gas valve behind the heater so that it was closed more (not letting as much gas flow through) so that it wouldnt trip the check valve. the heater now works fine and keeps a consistent temperature with no problems.
