Question about Focusrite Saffire Pro 26I/O 26 In/26 Out Rackmount Firewire Audio Interface

Open Question

Focusrite Saffire sound clicking / 'Choking' on firewire

Had this unit for some time, and quite a while ago I was using it (just in sound card mode over Firewire control) when the sound output level jumped to full for a quick second, after my initial heart attack, I managed to shut the thing down by pulling the plug. I then had trouble getting the unit to work, and after exhaustive emails / phone calls / web sites was told better chuck the unit as it would cost too much to fix. I was not keen to throw out a perfectly good $1000.00 paper weight! - so I stuck it on the to hard pile and there it sat for 8 months. About 3 months ago I dug it out to try a few things. The end result from the first prob was the unit was dead. No sound over Firewire. So after a few attempts at updating the firmwear, I managed to succeed. (I kept getting the message, "it did not need it", but go tthroough anyway). After that, rather shockingly, it worked!. But after about 1 hour, or maybe 3 of continuous use, the sound output would sound choked... very tight and robotic, until it just became "gobbledeegook" - (not sure if that is a word but best describes it :). It might work after a reset, sometimes not. Seems to go on a wing and a prayer... ever ever. My initial thought was the Firewire protocol on the computer was not up to scratch. So am about to try it on a Dual G5. The computer I was using was a Single G4 1gHz. Would have thought that wold have been okay - perhaps not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Saffire unit works fine in Stand Alone Mode - Just plays up over Firewire. Cheers, Pete.

SOURCE: I have a Focusrite Pro 10 i/o Firewire Interface

I assume you are using condenser mics as you would NOT be using phantom power with any other type connected or other devices plugged in while you have phantom power. It is important to have ALL interconnected equipment, including the computer, powered from the SAME receptacle or power source. Make sure the power supply you are using is SPECIFICALLY for the unit from Focusrite as some supplies have filtering within the wall transformer module and others do not. The power supply MAY be generating magnetic fields... try moving it around and see if hum is affected. The capcitive coupling in a power supply can let in higher frequency components from lamp dimmers. Make sure you have no lamp dimmers anywhere near the equipment.

I need a reasonably priced audio interface to use with a remote synth and a MacBook (Garage Band). Any ideas?

I would go for getting someone else to record at studio, means they have all the professional ideas to bring to the table, solve problems, but if your just playing around in home a small focusrite 2/2 should do you, with 2 inputs for left and right mono from desk, or also dual linking in two separate channels via xlr.

How do i connect focusrite to europowered pmp4000

You don't say what item of Focusrite equipment you are trying to connect or for what purpose. Most focusrite stuff has jacks with analog outputs for each channel that can be used into the line ins on the mixer and jack/xlr combos that can be used to take a signal to the focusrite box. Then you get the firewire side for the PC and digital outputs as well which will not be of use with your mixer.

Look for numbers on the chip... It appears that in other gear that I can get schematics for Focusrite likes the NE5532 and the NE 5534 chips for op amp service.

Remove the offending plug ins and test. Then install one at a time and test. You may be running out of processing power to service all of them. Each effect requires a lot of computer resources. Look at your system idle time when you do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and click on the processes tab while running the plugins. The last item in the list is the system idle time. If this number is small, you are out of computer power and or resources.

My Focusrite ISA428 has some consistent issues where channel 1 buzzes, and channel 4 is unusable for 2 hours after power up. Channel 4's needle goes right up to the meter and stutters there for an hour,...

Does this happen with no mics AND outputs connected? If it doesn't, you have a severe ground loop problem. Make sure ALL interconnected equipment is powered from teh same receptacle or power source. Use ONLY balanced lines, XLR or TRS cables. A possible problem MIGHT be supersonic feedback that you can't hear but is saturating the amp. Thats is why we disconnect all inouts and outputs and observe if symtoms are still there.

I just bought a Fender VF3 electric violin. It

The piezo pickups for violins REQUIRE a high impedance input preamp.

The measured impedance of My wife's violin is on the order of 2 megohms.

It sounds like you are having cable connection problems. If you don't have a preamp right at the vilin, then use a VERY short high impedance instrument cable.

Most of the Focusrite mic preamps I looked at had input impedance around 5K ohms which is unsuitable for the piezo pickups.

Here we use an Autolycus pickup on an acoustical vilin and an X2 wireless system. The transmiter has a very high input impedance and the resulting system sounds like a violin.

Some amps themselves DO have a high input impedance, but many designed for guitars do not. Long cables, especially low impedance ones, load the piezo pickup with capacitance which clobbers the high frequency response.
