Go into system and roll back driver. If this doesn't work, go into hardware and remove it. Restart pc. It should try to reinstall. It may ask for driver. Have it ready.

I have an acer aspire 5100-4720 notebook. The DVD drive will not show up in my computer. it does sometimes and work properly, but most times it is not present.\r\nwhat could be the cause

try system restore. or try to delete the upper and lower filters. To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start Collapse this imageExpand this image vistastartbutton.jpg, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

    Collapse this imageExpand this image securityshield.jpgIf you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
  2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
  3. In the right pane, if you have UpperFilters, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
  4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
  5. In the right pane, if you have LowerFilters, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
  6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
  7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

My Acer aspire 4720z DVD drive not working, its not reading any DVD / CD's.. what would be the problem and how can i solve this

Step 1 : Check out You have Apple's itunes or Quicktime player installed in your system.I have seen same problem as your's after installing  Apple's itunes or Quicktime player. But it was solve after uninstalling the softwares.

If you don't have  Apple's itunes or Quicktime player install in your Notebook, Try this

Step 2 : 1) click the start menu
2) click on "run"
3) type "regedit" and click ok
4) go to string key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5) delete "upper filters" and "lower filters in the right side window.
6) right click my computer in the start menu.
7) click properties
8) go to the hardware tab
9) click device manager
10) expand the dvd/cdrom drives
11) right click the dvd rom and click uninstall
12) restart computer

and check if it works now.

Step 3 : BIOS upgrade

Go to this link below
http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_4720.html
and download the BIOS accroding to your Operating system and check.

Note: I don't recommend the Step 3 as sometimes if BIOS upgrade fails,it might make your Notebook permenently unsuable.

In case you want to try step 3,Consult your manual well before undergoing the Upgradation process.

My Dvd/cd not working

Hey Hi.

FIRSTLY MAKE SURE SINCE HOW LONG YOU ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM AND TRY SYSTEM RESTORE IF YOU HAVEN'T TRIED IT AND IF YOU HAVE THEN FOLLOW THESE STEPS...

FIRST METHOD SYSTEM RESTORE
WINDOWS XP METHOD
Start > Run > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > Select A Highlighted Date And Then Click on it and then system will restart on its own.

WINDOWS VISTA METHOD
START > SEARCH > SYSTEM RESTORE > > Select A Highlighted Date And Then Click on it and then system will restart on its own.

In process of system restore any type of software installation made between the dates selected and current date would be gone which you can easily install after the issue is fixed if that was not the cause of the issue

1) Click on Start -> Run -> Regedit-> Registry Editor Will Come Up.

2) Then Follow These Registry Settings By Clicking The Small Triangle Mark In Front Of It..

3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
Current Control Set
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

OR SOMETHING WHICH IS SIMILAR TO IT BUT IT SURELY HAS THE E965 IN IT. IT WOULD BE NEARLY 5TH or 6TH Registry Key....

In Short Guide Yourself To This

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Once You've Reached In The Registry Key Then On The RIGHT HAND SIDE BOX Right Click upper filter and lower filter and then delete it...

THIS LINK WILL HELP YOU IN SEARCHING FOR THE CORRECT REGISTRY KEY VALUE AND DELETION

CLICK HERE FOR THE LINK

Restart Your System

Unknown cd-dvd rom driver for Acer Aspire 5100

the possible cause could be upper lower filters. does the cd drive show up in "My Computer"?
if so follw these steps -
click start-> run-> type "regedit" (no quotation)-> click file-> export(make sure that all is selected and that save location is in the C: drive, very important.) -> find this reg key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

make sure this is 100% right. now left click it once and stuff will come up in the right side of the window pane. delete the entries on the right side that say "upper filters" and "lower filters". restart your pc. hopefully this should work.
FYI, the registry is everything about the pc, be very carefull not to delete the wrong thing

Acer Aspire 5100 no longer "sees" its cd/dvd drive- anywhere.

You can check the BIOS to see if the drive is recognized and even attempt to boot from the drive using a bootable CD to verify it is functional (if using the Windows disc - just verify it reads - DO NOT REINSTALL)

If the drive works use the following to get the drive back in Windows:

Always backup your registry before editing and use care to find exact key!
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.
