My sharp cd-ba200 will barley play cds

Put the player On for few hours or overnight. Now remove the panel and get access to the optical head unit, use a clean ear bud to polish the optical head. If not the optical head is weak and must be replaced.

I also had a friend with durabrand that didn't play them at all.
If it is mp3 compatible, and Widows Media compatible, then it should play.

DVD display indicates "no disc"

Try a lens cleaner cd, as when the lens gets misaligned or if it's quite old, it will find it harder to read a DVD as the tracks are much closer together than that of a VCD as they are cd's and their tracks are wider apart and easier to read.
