You can download utilities from Hitachi here - http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm You didn't say which drive you have, but one of the utilities there will allow you to run diagnostics on your drive, format, and partition it.

SATA HARD DRIVE - XP INSTALLATION
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

Toshiba PSAG8U-023019 xp install problems

The reason is that Windows XP doesn't come with SATA hard drive drivers. You have two options. The easiest being go in BIOS and check for IDE compatibilty mode or IDE emulation. Enable this and XP will install just fine. Your other option is to use a program called nLite and download SATA drivers from intel's website and you can incorporate them into a Windows XP slipstream install disc and it will install no problem.

Hard disk drive not detected

firstly check your cable connections, then log onto your bios setup menu during startup and check whether the Hard drive is detected by your bios, if it is then you can try to format the harddrive using the ntfs system (use the long formatt) if you are using windows xp or later if using any earlier os then formatt with the FAT32 system.
If your HDD is not detected by the bios then try to download bios updates for your motherboard and install thed in windows. is this does not work then its time to get a new HDD. thanks
