Adjust shift linkage on a golf 4 speed gearbox

From the images I'm finding of it online it appears the easiest way to adjust it would be to take it loose. put the tyranny in first, as well as the shifter. Then adjust the linkage to fit, being careful not to move the shifter as you do it. do so for both linkages and run through the gears with the engine off and clutch dis-engaged to ensure you feel it hitting the gears as you move through them.

Make sure the linkages and everything does not have play it in or it will not be able to be adjusted. worn parts will have to be replaced.

Transmission

I had that problem with a VW also.
Turned out to be a combination of the motor mounts and the transmission shifting adjustment.
I also had an awful time finding someone who could fix it.
I had to find a VW expert, took me many weeks.
One way to tell if it is the transmission is to unhook all the shifting linkage from the transmission, and shift the gears by hand by moving the shifting lever on the side or top of the transmission.
You would need to have the car up in the air with all the wheels off the ground to do this.
If it works fine up in the air, it is your linkage.
Be blessed.

My 86 Cabriolet 5 speed just had the shifting linkage rebuilt by a non vw mechanic using an ebay kit. It's somewhat better but still not right. When the shifter is left loose and pushed forward it goes...

sounds like the linkage is misaligned, vw makes an alignment tool just 4 this problem. mine used to go into the wrong gear, and then I lost reverse I got so pissed off I slammed the shifter to the left and that fixed it, but I cant really recommend that you do this. Best of luck though!

Where is the shift linage located on an 1985 toyota 4x4 pickup truck? I still cant shift into gear from thje last support you gave me

Without seeing the problem myself, it sounds like you have a clutch problem. It could be the linkage but sounds like the clutch. A manual transmission's linkage is located on the top. It can be reached from the inside of the vehicle through the floorboard. The linkage is attached to the lower end of the gear shift and enters the top side of the transmission. A vehicle repair manual may be helpful, Haynes and Chilton are good ones. Good luck

Shift linkage problems with 1982 VW Westfalia - The gear shift inside the van suddenly when slack and 1st, 2nd and Reverse can no longer be selected.

there is a good chance its just the linkage, which i believe the westfalias had, but, most of the older vw's used plastic shift linkage, if you look just behind the tranny, there should be some bars with ball sockets on the ends, one of the short plastic ones has probably snapped one side of its socket if not the whole thing. its like a 5 dollar part at the dealership, if it is infact the same design. it happened on my friends 83 rabbit, so i would assume they still had the design, hope that helps!

Loss of acceleration. Transmission? Clutch? Cable?

The cable you are refering to should not be slack or, come off tighten it and, secure it also; check the transmission shift cable

1982 rabbit shift linkage

There is a plastic ball that is in the shift linkage that also wears and is usually not included in the shift linkage bushing kit. It is attached to a metal piece and is bolted to the shift linkage. This is generally the problem if you already replaced the bushings.

Sometimes the linkage is out of adjustment but I would make sure that the ball is not worn first. They generally cost $5.00 - $8.00 or so.

If you need to adjust the linkage you can try the following, but if the bushings or the ball is worn adjustment will not do any good.

There is an adjustment on the shift rod that goes from the shifter to the transmission. It is a rod slipped into a tube with a locking collar or clamp.

The way that I do this is to make sure that your vehicle is in 1st gear and then loosen the bolt on the clamp.

Make sure that the clamp is loose enough so that the shaft can slip in the tube. Put the shifter in the 1st gear position and then tighten the clamp.

You may need to fiddle with this a little to get it in just the right spot.

This is much easier if you have an assistant.

2003 VW Polo TDI 5speed - Sloppy gear lever/shift

It should feel pretty tight, but germans (vw audi bmw porsche mb) put a lot of rubber bits in the linkage and when the rubber wears out, there is more play.
If you want to fix it yourself,  check with the folks at blauparts.com for parts and advise on this.  They have OEM VW and Audi parts and they run a first rate repair shop also.  They will be able to tell you what rubber shift linkage parts are available AND how hard they are to replace.
germanautoparts.com is good for parts also
Dealship is usually most expensive for OEM parts.
Good luck,  when you get the rubber stuff replaced, it should feel nice and tight
