TV suddenly blanked (power is not off)

This TV suddenly blanked out - no sound or picture. It smelled like burning wires. There is a faint humming sound but nothing else except possibly a VERY faint yellow couple of lines on the bottom. ANy ideas? THis TV is 5.5 years old.

The Hitachi 51F500 set suffered a picture and sound loss this morning accompanied by a burning smell. The screen picture fluctuated before the system died. The power light is on, and tv signals are...

Burning smell usually signals that a part burned. This is a major malfunction, the power source of the tv was literally fried. Replacing it will be quite expensive - around $250 - and definitely a job for a pro - who know what else was damaged in there, the tv must be tested by someone who knows this very well.

Sounds like a bad capacitor or two in the power section. Do you hear a hissing sound also?

My tv made a popping sound, the screen went blank

Any set is repairable. It is the question of the cost and the availability of replacement parts.
It sounds like a component overheated and blew. Most likely there will be collateral damage where other components will also be damaged.
The failure could be in the power supply, or in any of the main drive circuits in the set.
You will have to call for a service estimate. In considering the age of this set, my preference would be to go out and get a descent LCD or Plasma set. The picture quality and performance of these new sets are far superior to the one you have!

Sony KP-41S3U

Good Day;
On that model look for a small yellow cap, half the size of coin, dime. LOOK very closely and you will see a small burnt spot on the cap. The TV uses about 4 of them, they are 120/110 @ 2 kv. There are located in the high voltage circuit.
This the most common, it could be flyback or HV devider.
Good Luck and Day, big irish.
LET ME know.

Panasonic WIDESCREEN 52" hdtv: power tries to come on and then there is a burning smell. The power button LED on the TV flashes several times. This starting happening after the TV was on and suddenly...

check of fluid leak from the tubes, check to see where the burning smell is comming from. could be anode, hv wire, splitter, surge caps in h-circuit, but it sounds like a high voltage transformer.
what is your model number of your tv?
