Internet down? How to Setup a Backup Internet Connection

Does your business have an action plan to deal with the inevitable frustration of the Internet crashing? Many businesses rely on the Internet to keep their services going, whether it's for uninterrupted debit and credit points of sale, e-mailing clients, conferencing and staying connected, document management, or a calendar application. But what happens if your Internet goes down? Will you be left hanging, or do you have a backup?

Most companies in the Red Deer area experience an interruption in their Internet services about twice a year. This interruption often lasts about a day. Does this reflect your experience?

If your point of sales goes over the Internet or a phone line, then you are in the same boat I am talking about. As reliable as it is, sometimes it just goes down.

I have a solution for you, and depending on how important your Internet is, you can do some of it or all of it.

Solution

  1. Get your phone lines with Telus. Their phone services are typically reliable and their down time is usually limited to a couple of instances per year.
  2. Get your Internet with Shaw. By having your Internet based on Shaw, when it goes down, at least you still have your phone with Telus. I know these companies offer discount packages if you do all your phone and your Internet as a single package-but we are talking about having a backup here.
  3. Purchase a wireless USB data card from Rogers. This gives you a third back up, and if you combine it with an Asus router, it gives your entire office uninterrupted Internet services.
  4. Provide data plans to some or all of your employees. Teach them how to tether and to use those data plans when the Internet is not working. Many employees have this service already, so simply telling them it is okay to use their phones when the Internet is down is often enough.

How do I hook up my 2wire router?

Run a 2-strand or 4-strand telephone-wire from your telephone wall-jack to the telephone-port on the router.
Run an 8-strand "straight-through" (not "cross-over") Ethernet cable from one of the 'LAN' ports on the router to the network port on your computer.
Connect the AC power to the router, and turn it on.
You now should have Internet access.

Or, telephone the Technical Support department of your Internet Service Provider, and get them to help you, step-by-step.

I bought a Belkin 'Play' router to provide wireless internet connectivity from my CLEAR modem. I can't get the router to speedtest at half the speed as being directly connected (via ethernet cable) to the...

Use an Ethernet cable from the CLEAR modem into the WAN (or 'Internet') port on the Belkin.
Take a close look at the 8 coloured wires at each end of the Ethernet cable.
The 8 wires must be coloured in the _same_ order at both ends.

Be sure that you have a 'CAT-5' or 'CAT-5E' cable, not a 'CAT-3' cable, which is much slower, over long distances.

Use another Ethernet cable from one of the (three? four?) 'LAN' ports on the Belkin to the network-port on your computer. Again, check that you have a "straight-through" cable, not a "cross-over" cable.

Turn the CLEAR modem off.
Turn the Belkin off.
Turn your computer off.

Turn the CLEAR modem on, and wait until its lamps settle-down to a consistent pattern.

Turn the Belkin on, and wait until its lamps settle-down to a consistent pattern.

Turn your computer on, and let it boot.

You now should have Internet access.

Note that the router "dynamically" shares the Internet connection.
If there are 4 'LAN' ports, then each of the LAN ports gets as much speed as it needs;
you do not have a 25/25/25/25 split, unlike cutting-up an apple-pie to feed 4 people.

Run a "speed-test" on your computer, and you should be getting as much speed as you are paying for. Having the Belkin in the "middle" of your network should *NOT* slow-down the speed-test at all.

How can I install or connect my d link to the internet line and my computer

Hi,

I assume you have a broadband connection which you are directly to your computer.

In that case please connect the broadband ethernet cable to one of your switch port.
Get a new CAT5 or CAT6 ethernet straight cable and connect one end to any free port of the DES-1008D 8-Port Ethernet Switch and other end to your Computer.

No configuration needed to be done on DES-1008D 8-Port Ethernet Switch

you have no high speed ports installed on your computer. what you have is USB 1.0. you can however purchase a high speed USB pci card (usb 2.0) and install it in your computer to get faster transfer speeds.

Internet not Sharing

What type of cables are you using for the connections? are they straight or cross? It could stop working if you change a straight with a cross.

Also if it has an 'uplink' port check to ensure you connect the internet link there

Make sure your not using a crossover through cable. Also make sure your not connecting the cable into the internet port, which is usually the first or last port.
  • A straight-thru cable has identical ends.
  • A crossover cable has different ends.
  • A straight-thru is used as a patch cord in Ethernet connections.
  • A crossover is used to connect two Ethernet devices without a hub or for connecting two hubs.
  • A crossover has one end with the Orange set of wires switched with the Green set.

Hi I cannot connect a NETLINK 2wire modem to my linkeye g router. What do I need to set so I can get the modem and router to connect

The 2WIRE modem will have at least 3 ports:
* AC power,
* 4-pin telephone-cable, connecting to a telephone-jack in a wall-port,
* 8-pin Ethernet-cable, connecting to the 'WAN' port on the LINKSYS router.

Look at both ends of the Ethernet cable. It's necessary that the colour-arrangement of the 8-wires is _IDENTICAL_ at both ends, i.e., a "straight-through" cable, NOT a "cross-over" cable.

With another "straight-through" Ethernet-cable, connect one of the LAN ports on the router to the network-adapter port on your computer.

Turn on the 2WIRE modem. Wait for the lamps on it to settle down to a repeating pattern.

Turn on the router. Wait for the lamps on it to settle down to a repeating pattern.

Turn on your computer. When Windows finishes booting, you should have a connection to the Internet.
