Dear Richard, I wrote about my GE 25.4 Cu. Ft. Stainless Side-by-Side Refrigerator with Dispenser GSS25XSRSS before. It was not cooling in the freezer and ice cream melted. I unplug it for a little while and then pluged it in again and it started to run fine and cool in the freezer and other side. But It goes thru the same routine every few weeks it stops cooling and things melt. So I unplug it again and replugged it after a few minute and it starts to work again. It is driving me crazy.

I don't know what is wrong with it or what it is that I need to repair. Please help me. It is only 7 years old and I keep looking new.

  • Josefina Harmon Dec 03, 2012

Like today it is working but I notice a thin frost inside the freezer. I broke down yesterday and I unplugged it and replugged it again and it started to work.

OK, it has got to be a sticky relay on the main control board. Replace the board and it should be fixed. Here is the board to order.http://bit.ly/TpI8Jy

Hi Richard Could you tell me what could be the problem if the Ref is freezing the fresh food compartment. We have change several part on it and now it is doing this.

If the refrigerator is freezing up you probably have a bad damper that is stuck open allowing cold air to constantly flow into the refrigerator side. Here is the part to order.http://bit.ly/X4vUqb

SOURCE: GE side by Side Fridge

froggy, First check the back panel of the freezer section and see if you have a big frost build up. If so, you probably have a defrost problem, heaters more than likely. If there is no frost build-up check to see if the fan in the freezer (evaporator fan) is running. If that's ok, next would be the automatic damper. Have someone unplug the refer. Open the refer door and listen for the damper door to open when someone plugs the refer back in. If thats operational, next would be the thermistors, you would have to ohm them out to see if they are in range. Seldom is this the problem. Check these things out and get back on what you find. SOURCE: Items sometimes freeze on refrigerator side of unit - model GSS25LGMA

It is most likely a bad damper motor.  This is where the cool air comes out into the fridge section.  On this model it is a fairly common problem and comes a whole assembly.  The part # is WR49X10091 and will cost anywhere from $100 to $122.  Knowing this model I would bet this is your problem.  If the damper is bad and stuck open cold air will just keep blowing in.  It is suppose to open and close based on the temp setting.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

SOURCE: Kitchenaid Side by side refrigerator/freezer

when is the last time you cleaned the condenser coils the areas you describe are supposed to be hot there is a loop there to keep the door gaskets dry but should not be too hot pull the fridge out check to see if the fan is running on the compressor then unplug the unit and clean the coils the only other thin that will make it super hot if there is a leak in the low side of the system and has drawn air in see if cleaning the coils fixes it first and we will go from there

SOURCE: Whirlpool runs, but freezer not freezing and frig not freezing

If the compressor is running but the unit is not cooling you may have lost the refrigerant.  See if the condenser coils at the back or bottom are hot.  If they are only warm then the refrigerant is low and can be recharged.  Service tech should check for leak in coolant system.

I have a KitchenAid refr. mod. KSRL25FRSS00 it is turned down to the lowest setting and still freezes things in vegetable box. (new control board?)

Is your milk or eggs freezing? All the cooling in the refrig and freezer spaces is done in the freezer. Sometimes, the control labeled freezer temp controls a vent between the freezer and ref space, allowing air into the ref side. the other control determines run time. try turning thefrz setting up to raise the ref temp.

Not enough info. If the unit is totally dead then I would suspect the main board (in the rear under a panel) if the fans are running I would suspect the compressor is not running.

Your inlet valve is malfunctioning. Sometimes when they go bad they either let in to much water or none at all. It is located on the back under accesss panel where your water line connects to your fridge. Rate me if I helped you!

GE side by side refrigerator. Fridge side not cooling - help!

Hi, they have changed lots of parts, were they defected, did they tested parts for faults or they just change parts, because it's available, there's always a reason why a certain part, go bad. so far you change most of parts in ref. check refrigerant (gas, freon) pressure, check compressor, for faulty suction and high side valve, it's possible your compressor loosing efficiency. or say if compressor normally pump 50 psi. now it's pumping 40 psi. is the refrigeration cycle balance ? is there restriction in your ref. system? is compressor running long enough? plug on ref. let it run for 1hr, listen to compressor for any clicking sound, fans and everything else could be working, be compressor not, compressor could be short cycling (not working long enough) also check voltage in receptacle(outlet) with digital multi-tester, get accurate voltage reading, let me know, could also be a faulty circuit breaker in house (building) not your ref. let me know, system could have very slow refrigerant leak, you could have a very small (slow) gas leak, that's why your refrigerator get hot first, then your freezer, there's a condensate line (loop) that passes through, ref body, close to doors to prevent door gasket from freezing, after few years sometimes develope leaks, cause by rusting. it's very possible there could be small leak in your system. let me know what happened.good luck.

Freezer is cold but not freezing the ref is not cold

Simple! Refrigerent leak only results in poor cooling. Check your thermostate also to make double sure of the cause.

Freezer dos not Freeze and Regular side is not cold

It is possible that the freezer side is iced up due to a fanmotor not working. Check. If the fanmotor is working, then there may be a fault with the defrost system which is controlled by a main pc board and may need to be replaced.

Freezer compartment of refrigerator not freezing

First, I think it’s important to know that the Ref side has no cooling coils, it’s basically a box and the cold air in the freezer is blown over by a fan through a channel into the Ref side. This channel has a door which regulates how much cold air goes through. You probably have two control knobs in the Ref side, one controls the temp with numbers 1-9, 9 being the coldest. This temp control tells the compressor how long to run. The other control is for that little door and it may have letters A-E, E being the coldest. If you set it on E (coldest) then this will close that little door and keep most the cold air in the freezer.
So, how can the Ref side be cold and the freezer side not freezing?

1. Coolant leak. There is enough coolant to keep the Ref side cool but not enough to freeze on the freezer side.

2. Defrost system failure. The coils on the freezer side are clogged with ice and it's just a matter of time when the Ref side won't cool either. The back wall in the freezer will be covered with ice/frost
