Question about Epson Stylus Color 740 InkJet Printer
It has been out of ink for a while and I bought a new cartridge for it. The other day my son in-law took out the old cartridge and then replaced it again. Now when I hold down the button for 3 seconds it will not stop for me to replace the old cartridge. It appears that the printer memory thinks there is a new cartridge in the printer and it will not stop for me to change it. Any suggestions ??
To force a Cartridge change press and hold down the Paper feed (load eject) button for over 5 seconds and the cartridges will move into a change position. Please note: if the cartridges move to a position where only the Black cartridge can be changed pressing the Paper feed button once will move the head so that the colour can be changed.
Before changing the carts it is recommended that you run the head cleaning utility.
When you have poor print quality and have tried the head cleaning utility it is recommended that you replace the cartridges. Ift the red lights aren't on to indicate the ink is out you need to force the cartridges into a change position. To do this press and hold down the paper feed button (load eject) for over 5 seconds and the cartridges will move into a change position. This is a hard one and you will probably end up wasting a cartridge if you force it across (like i used too) just try forcing it across (with power off) removing the cartridge, pushing it back (it must go back to the exact spot it came from) and switching it on, hopefully it'll notice its missing the cartridge and flash the lights to you. once this happens you should be able to replace the cartridge as normal by applying the 3 second button.
If the printer starts to make a clunking noise after moving the cartrige holder physicaly you may need to clean the runner bar (the metal one) do this with a clean cloth and then apply a light oil (not wd40) onto another clean cloth and run over the bar again.

If you have carried out 4 to 5 head cleans, waited about 8 hours and done another 3 or head cleans doing nozzle checks after each clean (as recommended by the manual) and there is still no improvement then you will need a third party head cleaning solution such as this one:
