Check the fuel line it could be pluged up. never leave gas in any thing when you put it up for the winter.

Clean or change air filter. Clean, gap or change spark plug. Empty gas tank add fresh gas with Stabil. When spark plug is removed pull rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray starter fluid in spark plug hole before replacing spark plug. Clean outside of carb so choke works freely. Spray starter fluid into carb breather hole with air filter removed and try to start. if running replace air filter and cover. If no start disassemble carb and clean. If no start replace carb.

My MTD Yard machines riding mower won't start.

Probably dead gas from sitting too long. Dump it out & put in fresh gas.Could have moisture in it. Pull out spark plug & crank it over several times after putting gas & let it sit a while to dry out or blow it out with compressed air. It should go.

Won't start. Drained old fuel and added fresh; cleaned in-tank fuel filter; cleaned plug. Still won't start

i would take the plug out and and the spark plug wire on the plug and try cranking it over and make the plug is firing if there is no fire then the ignition coil is dead but if you have fire then its a carb problem rarely ever a timing considering most mowers are timed with key ways which prevent them from jumping time.but if you have fire your good their but my overall suggestion is to rebuild the carb and swap out the spark plug if the mower has set for a period of 6 months or longer.

Ok i changed the oil and didn't do the fuel added stablizer stuff.....changed the air filter and spark plug and now my briggs and stratton won't start Now what do i do?

One thine easy to do is add some fuel treatment to the gas supply to help clean the carburetor. May I suggest adding some Chem Tool Berryman B-12 to your fuel can. The prescribed rate for autos is sbout 1 ounce/gallon. It has some good cleaners in it. Auto Parts stores sell it.
Digging a little deeper, you need to check for spark. An easy way to do that is to remove the wire from the plug. Then, remove the plug from the engine. Then, reattatch the plug wire and ground the body of the plug to the engine (ensure that the gap is correct first). In darkness or semi-dark conditions, pull the starter cord. You need to witness a nice blue spark on the plug.
If there is no spark present, make sure the plug was grounded correctly. Then, you may need to check the "air-gap" between the coil legs and the magnets in the flywheel. This procedure is a little more hands on. So check for spark. Use only SAE 30 oil in the engine...you can use muti-viscosity like 10W-30 if you use synthetic. Post back, we are here to help.
Understand, I don't know the AGE or the overall mechanical condition of your mower or even what size engine it has.

Can't start my Pe550 Gas Edger. I cleaned the air filter. I'm having trouble getting the old spark plug out to replace it. How do I do it, and what else could be the reason for it not starting?

Hello rne.... Take your edger to any auto parts store and either borrow or buy the correct spark plug wrench to remove it. Have them remove it for you to check it and see if you have any serious problem that a bad spark plug might show. Then purchase a new spark plug, have the store gap it and install it. They do this fo no fee.

Once you have a new spark plug, new, fresh fuel with oil added to the fuel mix, and your clean air filter your edger should start right up. If it doesn't get a can of starter fluid, give the air intake a couple of squirts and start it up. If it stalls again get a helper to spray more starter fluid at the air intake until you run it for at least a full minute on the starter fluid. That will clean out any crud that is causing your troubles. Joe

Ran last year, won't start this year. Changed fuel and replaced spark plug. Checked spark and attempted to start with battery and tried with pull cord but no start. pulled plug and it had fuel on it so...

It might have tipped over on its side. Look at the air filter, if you see oil or gas on the filter then you might have to remove and clean the carburetor. I would start by cleaning/replacing the air filter and trying it again. If its getting fuel and the spark plug works then the only other side of the fire triangle is air.

I have a 03 Honda spirit 750 --was riding yesterday when it started spiting/sputtering like it was out of fuel, I checked fuel(half tank) I put another gallon in just to be sure but no luck. Also tried...

Drain the carbs. Water condensation in the gas tank makes it's way into the carb float bowl. After a while the water builds up enough to replace gas in the carbs. Bikes don't run well on water. If that doesn't work at least no money has been spent. Next, stick in fresh spark plugs and be sure the air filter is clean.

Bought unit new last summer. Used it once last summer and once this year. It started fine both times. Today, it will not crank. I have replaced the spark plug, checked the air filter (it is clean), gas...

Unable to crank? Do you mean unable to start?

If you leave gasoline inside tank over long period of time, that will 'gum-up' and ruin carburetor.
To prevent problem, put additive in gasoline or empty gas from tank:: under gas tank should be a hex bolt that holds up gas filter > loosen bolt and drain gas.

Starting the engine:
Take off air filter and spray WD-40 directly into carburetor.
Start engine, engine should fire on the WD-40 accelerant.
If engine fires but does not keep running, try spraying WD-40 into carburetor continuously to see if you can keep engine going.
If engine stops each time after it no longer gets WD-40, then carburetor is bad or gasoline not getting to carburetor or gasoline is bad.
Try fresh gasoline.
Do not turn small engine on side or upside down or oil will get into carburetor.

Check gas supply: Go to gas filter under gas tank. Pull loose rubber hose that connects to carburetor and see if gas comes out rubber hose.
If gas is flowing to carburetor, then carburetor is gummed up.
Small engine repair might suggest 'gum out' or have other suggestions ... but you may need a new carburetor

If engine will not fire on WD-40
If engine will not fire on WD-40 at all, then spark coil may be bad or exhaust port is clogged
Check screen that covers exhaust >> is it covered with carbon and dirt or can air pass through it easily?
Check spark
Remove spark plug
Put spark wire back on spark plug
Hold spark plug by rubber spark cap so hands don't touch metal part of spark plug
Touch spark plug threads against hole where spark plug was removed >>> metal to metal so it conducts electricity
Pull start cord and look for sparking between spark plug threads and metal of engine (don't look at the spark gap ... look where metal meets metal
If you have no spark, the spark coil is bad >> time for estimate from small engine repair shop or get your part number and order replacement

Wont start after 6 mos. I changed the spark plug, drained & added fresh gas, checked the fuel filter... Kicks over fine. Ran for 4 seconds, then it died. Always ran & started great before.

With a new plug and fresh gas it should start. Check to make sure there isn't a kill switch turned off or that the gas petcock from the tank to the carb is on.

How did you check the fuel filter? Disconnecting it from the fuel line that goes to the carb is the best way, making sure the gas is turned on under the tank. Bleed off a little gas into a can or something just to make sure the filter isn't plugged.

The last thing I'd do is take off the air filter and spray a little starting fluid in the carb. It may start and run several times if there is old gas in there somewhere. Remember the bowl on the carb is probably still full of old gas. After some fresh fuel reaches the plug it should start and continue to run.

(You might drain the bowl on the carb of ols gas before you go any further)

Good luck!
