I have a red, white, green, orange and black but no yellow. How do I wire my Honeywell RTH2510/RTH2410 how do I get it to work with my old Carrier heat pump?

Looks like your system is a heatpump system and that t-stat will not run a heatpump , you need a t-stat for 2heat and 1 cool systems

you have to go down to your furnace and follow the thermostat wire ...it connects to a terminal strip or fan centre...the color doesn;t really matter...installers mix and match all the time....look at the furnace wiring and mark it down...Red on "R"...Green on "Y" whatever it is...and connect it accordingly upstairs...if you only have 4 thermostat wires downstairs you will need a jumper wire between RH and RC...if you have 5 wires you will see 2 wires on "R" at the furnace.,...and connect either to RH and RC at the thermostat

If you have a heat pump, the thermostat that will operate it most generally will have an "O' terminal for the orange wire, this is the circuit that energizes the reversing valve on the heat pump, be sure that the stat says heat pump on the box. hope this helps

How can I make a thermostat connection?


Good morning Yakup.

The best way is to write down how the old t-stat was wired. If that's not available, the only way to determine for certain where each wire goes, is to check what the installer did at the terminals in your home comfort system. Please note the there is high voltage electric in each piece of equipment so if you decide to open up panels, there is always the risk of damaging the equipment or worse, injury or death if you are not a qualified service technician. However, typical color assignments are as follows:
R= (24v from heating appliance) Red
RC= (24v from cooling appliance) Red
These two are only separated when you have two different appliances providing seasonal comfort, like a boiler and an air handler. If you have a warm air furnace with an air conditioner or a heat pump attached then R+RC will have a jumper across them and only one RED wire will be landed there
W= (heat) White
Y= (cool) Yellow
G= (fan) Green
Those colors are pretty standard
The rest of the colors depend on availability in the jacket and are really up to the installer. You mentioned 7 wires but 8 conductors is more likely so I'm assuming the remaining colors are black, brown, blue, and orange.
I always use the following:
C= (common) Black
O/B= (reversing valve for a heat pump) Orange if the valve is energized for heat and Blue if the valve is energized for a/c.
Aux/E= (auxiliary or electric heat) Brown
L= I believe this is a diagnostic terminal for some systems with feedback data and is not used frequently.
After wiring there is some programing to do to set up your new thermostat to your type of system.

Be sure you are looking at the letters set up for heat pump. Orange should be "O". Remove jumper between w2 and e. Then be sure you have the settings correct in the tstat for a heat pump with back up heat. Good Luck!!

Tried to replace my carrier thermostat with a Honeywell and screwed up the wiring sequence. Now trying to rehook the old carrier and can't get it to work. Help!!


Here is the normal way of wiring a thermostat:

Y=yellow (cooling)
G=green (fan)
R=hot (red)
W=white (heat)
C=blue or black (common) only on some thermostats

If you have a heat pump: o=orange (reversing valve)

Some thermostats have "rc" and "rh". These terminals must be jumpered together or the thermostat will not work. Hope this helps you.

black = ground
Grey/blue = Left rear (+)
yellow/black = ignition 12v
white/purple = right rear (-)
green/black = (could this be green / violet?) than it is 12v constant
blue/red = illumination
orange/green = left front (+)
white/green = right front (-)
blue/white = left front (-)
brown/yellow = left rear (tan / yellow) (-)
green/orange = right front (+)
orange/red = right rear (+)
blue = not used

I Have a honeywell RTH2410 Thermostat I wired it without the blue wire which used to go to X on my old thermostat. Now it comes on with aux heat all the time and I have a Heat Pump. How can I fix this?


What was the old thermostat labels and the wire colors that went to them?
The typical heatpump wiring Terminals are:
R = Red = Hot side of Transformer
C-B-X = Common side of transformer Depending on brand of heatpump
Y = Yellow = Cooling Contactor
G = Green = Furnace Blower
O = Orange Reversing Valve Energize to Cool
B = Blue Reversing Energise to Heat Depending on brand of heatpump.
W2 = White = Auxiliary Heat
You need to be sure where each wire comes from when you connect them to the new thermostat.
The best way to do that is to go to the furnace and see where they are connected. R-Y-G are probably correct, you need to see where the Blue wire comes from and determine what the X terminal was on the old thermostat.

I have a carrier air/heating unit with pump. It has 8 wires. Brown,blue, white, yellow, green, black, orange,and red. I'm trying to install honeywell thermostat. The wires from my unit are suppose to go...


Turn the power off to the air handler. Open the control cover. Write down what color wires go together at the wiring terminal. All 8 wires are probably not used.
Post the findings here.
In most cases,
E= brown-emergency heat
AUX=white-auxillary heat to supplement HP
Y= yellow-to compressor for heat or cool(hp)
G=green-indoor fan
O-orange-reversing valve on HP when energized in COOL
L=t-stat light(probably not used)
R=red-24v incoming power
B=black-reversing valve on HP when energized in HEAT
C=blue-common wire for 24v
Only one of the "O" or "B" will be used. Not both.

Heating and Cooling Thermostat - can't get the wires right


Depending on if you have gas or oil heat the connections would be slightly different, but if you were only using the red, white, and black before, this should work. Red to Rc with jumper to Rh (or vise versa..) White to white, and Black to your Y terminal. Your Rc and Rh terminals are your 24 v supply, Yellow is connected to your outdoor unit, and W is the common for the heat, and G is for you high speed fan. Hope this helps
