I have the same problem and it is DEFINITELY the inverter.

I tore apart the PSU and seen most of the SAMXON Capacitors bulging or have popped the bottom cap.

This could be an easy (and cheap) fix. Just head to your local electronics store with the inverter board and ask for them.

Some, with a few bucks, will replace them for you. Make sure you use well renown capacitors (ex. Rubycon).

Your inverter is dying. It produces ~2k volts for the ccfl (cold cathode fluorescent lights) that surround your display. At a few milliamps. Probably bad or leaking capacitors on the inverter or power supply board. So it is either using too much power (bad ccfl) or a weakening power supply (higher likely).
It could be cold solder connections becoming intermittent. Remove the base, remove the screws on the backside, and split the case CAREFULLY. Inspect the power supply and inverter for obvious failure or leaking capacitors. Replace same... If your lucky, it will work.

How to open gateway FPD 1765 LCD CASE OR BACK COVER

At Last! Okay this is how you open a Gateway FPD 1765 monitor. This Monitor open from the front first to reveal 4 screw under the black trim. Lay the screen face up, NOT FACE Down. So that the GATEWAY LOGO is looking at you. Carefully, lift up the black plastic trim slide a knife or slim tool, or your fingers will do,lifting the trim up a off. BE CAREFUL NOT TO BREAK THE POWER BUTTON WIRES, near the power on button. Then remove the 4 screw holding the back cover on. When you remove these screw the monitor is free, but careful there are 2 set of thin short wires that need to be un plug. You should be able to go for there.

Monitor flashes on but with 1-3 seconds it goes to balck screen. I've replaced the electrolytic caps in the power supply, but it didn't help

Try different video and/or power cables, but most likely this is dead. Sorry!
If it's still under warranty, (or the computer it came with is), call Gateway support.

When I turn on my monitor I can see the Gateway letters come on the screen but then it just goes dark again. It comes on for a split second and then goes dark again.

joel_herrera, Yes, this is a very common symptom of a failing Switch-Mode-Power-Supply and/or Inverter circuit! Very common in 2-4 year old lcd/fpd's. How old is your's? Do you have warranty? Have you tried the Flashlight test? DO THIS! Reconnect lcd monitor to your fully booted PC with a known good WIN desktop screen. Then power "on" the HD2201 and tell me what happens and what you see or don't see after the screen goes BLACK! Shine a bright flashlight onto the screen at different angles and let me know the results. I'm louie12fix on fixya or lmistyrel @aol.com BYE

Monitor goes blank

I was thinking about your problem, I just had a similar issue and the problem is that the inverter or the power supply with an embedded inverter had gone bad.

The reason it goes black is because the inverter fails to provide power to the LCD Display.

The only way to fix this is to open up the FPD:

*note these are instructions for the most popular FPD 1730*

1.there should be four screws on the back --> plus two large screws that hold the FPD stand and the Monitor together.

2.Open the back by pulling the cover off
Remove 7 screws holding the frame and the power button for the LCD

3.Remove two screws through holding a silver cover and remove cables.(pinkwhite) (blackwhite)
Please note where they belong before removal**

4.On the edges left and right are two screws 4 total ---> remove and remove LCD off of frame**becareful because the backlight Damaging can cause severe damage to your LCD panel.

5.Choose your model
Your FPD has 3 boards (power, inverter(backlights) Logic Video)
replace the inverter with well known good one

Your FPD has 2 boards(Power with inverter on edges, Logic Video)
replace the power board with a well known good one

6.Then do steps 1-5 in reverse order(putting your FPD back together.

I hope this is significant help
