SOURCE: John Deere hydro 185 When I try to start

You have a bad disk in the starter solenoid pull the starter and go to a shop and buy a new solenoid or flip the disk in the solenoid and sand the two contacts so that it will make contact.

SOURCE: 1987 john deere 750 compact tractor 4 wheel drive, wont start

percussive maintenance my friend. Try banging on the solenoid and starter with a hammer while in the start position. Also, if you have a voltmeter, you can see where voltage is getting to and that will help you as well.

SOURCE: problem with John Deere L120 tractor

Park brake switch is the most likely culprit, any other would cause the tractor to not turn over in the crank position.

Why does my LA105 john deere lawn tractor only click when i turn key?

The click you hear is the starter solenoid. If the starter doesn't engage, it is suspect.

I have a John Deere 160 lawn tractor. Not used for past 8 years. When I hook up battery, starter wants to turn over immediately without using the key. Any ideas?

It either a starter problem or an electrical short cause by mice.
Disconnect the purple/white wire at the starter solenoid. If the starter still tries to operate then it is internal to the starter otherwise it is a electrical short.

My john deere 316 tractor will start but the starter keeps spinning, even if I turn off and remove key. I must disconnect battery at times to stop the starter. Any ideas?

It's not your switch, it's your starter solenoid sticking open. Te same way the starter spins a gear up to the flywheel an retracts it when it's not receiving power, the solenoid has an electrically operated contact toggle switch inside that over years of use and very likely corrosion, has now stuck in the open or on position. Replace it, they're really cheap and extremely universal. It's a simple design so they're used in automotive applications very commonly.

I have a john deere 240 lawn tractor. It will not turn over. Bat. has 12.45 volts. i think my electronic pto switch has gone bad. Any way to check it?

Engine wont turn over on lawn tractor. There are several kill switches that could cause the problem. The seat switch, electric pto or the clutch switch. There are also fuses in the electric circuit that could be blown. If you hear a clicking sound when you turn the key then it could be a weak battery, weak starter or the engine has locked up. If locked up remove plug and squirt oil in spark plug hole. Sometimes that helps if cylinder has been flooded with gas.

John Deere 2010 utility tractor, lights come on dash board, but it wont start. Its in neutral, PTO is okay, seat switch okay

1) Battery condition and clean cable connections
2) Check the voltage & connections at the solenoid
*Is full battery voltage found at the solenoid?
3) Does the small wire that activates the solenoid from the ignition switch/safety switches have voltage when the key is in the start position

a) voltage yes, but it does not start; suspect solenoid
b) voltage no, inspect and check all safety switches for voltage to and from each switch
c) safety switches do NOT have voltage to them: inspect connections on ignition switch and check for voltage coming into the switch from the battery.
