SOURCE: What oil type do I use...2003 vw beetle?

if U live in a cold climate use 5W-30W, if u live in a moderate climate with hot summers use 10W-30W, any name brand meets your engines requirements. Do not use any oils heavier than these two, it can cause engine bearing damage.

My 2011 Kia Cerato "S" has been using a lot of oil. The cylinder head was re-conditioned and engine serviced. The now engine blows smoke every time on starting. What is the probable cause ?

depends on how the head was reconditioned
were new valve guides installed along with new valves
were the stem seals correctly fitted
was a compression test done to determine the wear condition of the engine
smoke on start up is oil in the combustion chamber from valve stem seals , worn rings , sump pressure from excessive blow by through the line to the air inlet
check for oil leaks ( filter etc ) but using a lot of oil indicates ring problem, excessive bearing clearance overloading the oil control ring
try using a heavier grade of oil 30w 50 or oil for worn motors

I have a 2004 Toyota highlander leaking oil, oil light comes on. Could it be the rubber rings?

a 2004 toyota highlander V6

this should be your engine type
The 2GR-FE is a 3.5 L (3456 cc)

if leaks are that bad
always check the engine oil level before you drive off

fixing oil leaks on motors
degrease whole motor top and bottom

start with replacing the oil sender it may be the cause of the oil light coming on
after degrease
lay cardboard or paper under the car
take out for a drive and park over the paper over night

this pin points most of the oil leak locations
leaks from a V6 motor
rocker covers/ spark plug tube 0 rings.engine seals
cam seals
front and rear engine seals leak often
sump gasket can leak

if oil consumption or light on continues
can be a failing engine oil pump
or worn main bearings giving low oil pressure to the whole engine
you could be burning oil from worn piston rings
or hardened valve stems

a mechanic can fit an oil pressure gauge to the motor when hot
to check running oil pressure to confirm low oil pressure

if engine is worn out

it is possible to fit a lower mileage used motor to your highlander
its often cheaper than and engine rebuild

If I drive my 2007 beetle at or above 2500rpm for 10 minutes or more, and then slow down, I get smoke out of the exhaust - but only in the low gears (1,2,3) and only for a few days.

the symptom indicates failed valve stem seals
by deceleration , there is a vacuum created in the cylinders and that is sucking oil past the valve stems
the low gears is the highest vacuum creation as the engine is running at high rpms and when the throttle is closed the vacuum can go as high as 25" mercury in the manifold and cylinders
oil can also be drawn up past the oil control rings
the indications are that the motor is a bit worn but I am staying with failing valve stem seals or worn valve guides
a knocking sound on deceleration is worrying as it could be first signs of bearings or gudgeon pin problems
have a full wet/dry compression test done on the engine to determine condition
also have a mechanical oil pressure test done to determine oil pressure in operation conditions

My Atos Prime 1.1 GLS has oil on the 3th and 4th plug and is smoking when stretching gears

depends on how many km /miles done on that motor
and service history and treatment

oil on plugs and smoking under load means
leaking rocker cover
oil leaks somewhere else where oil gets hot

lots of oil usage from sump means
oil seal leaks or sump pan leak
worn rings or valves in number 3 and 4 cylinders
or
worn valve stems that can be replaced with the head on

if the latter
a compression test is required to tell if an engine rebuild is required or fit a used engine

What causes heaps of smoke on start up , usually cold but goes once operating temperature?Smoke colour is more whitish than oil coloured so is fuel related!

It helps to indicate what vehicle you have , which engine is fitted and the mileage it has done when posing your questions.
.
No it is not fuel related but very likely engine oil and valve stem related.

The most likely problem is that the valve stem seals are leaking instead of sealing and when you park the car for a decent length of time (as overnight) the oil in the cylinder head drains down via the bad seals into the cylinders and builds up.

When you start the car you will get instant smoke from the exhaust and oil smoke will linger (unlike steam).. It will keep smoking until most of the excess oil has been burned up but oil will continue to slowly leak into the cylinders while driving and will be burned up quickly and cannot accumulate until you shut down the engine again and leave the car again for hours.

Stand behind the car after it has been sitting for a while and check the emissions. Oil smoke is very distinctive in smell and it lingers.

It turns on, but won't go. The belts are on and moving.

Most lawn tractors today have hydrostatic transmissions. The drive belt is used to create hydraulic pressure using an oil specified by the manufacturer. Over times, seals in these transmissions will shrink, and they will slowly leak out the oil that is used to provide drive pressure. Check the oil level in the transmission and refill as necessary with the correct type of oil as specified by the manufacturer. Once that is done, you will usually have to "bleed" the system by operating the drive lever back and forth between forward and reverse directions until you purge all the air from the transmission. That should restore normal drive operation.

My 2008 chevy avalanche is burning 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles

How many miles on your vehicle ? Do you see any leak spots on the ground from the truck ? Blue exhaust , oil burning , valve guide seals , piston rings , PCV clogged .

Oil Consumption Diagnosis
Checks
Causes
Excessive oil consumption, not due to leaks, is the use of 1 L (1 qt) or more of engine oil within 3 200 kilometers (2,000 miles).
Preliminary
The causes of excessive oil consumption may include the following conditions:
• External oil leaks
Refer to Oil Leak Diagnosis .
• Incorrect oil level or improper reading of the oil level indicator
With the vehicle on a level surface, run the engine for a few minutes, allow adequate drain down time, 2-3 minutes, and measure for the correct engine oil level.
• Improper oil viscosity
Refer to the vehicle owners manual and use the recommended SAE grade and viscosity for the prevailing temperatures.
• Continuous high speed driving and/or severe usage
• Crankcase ventilation system restrictions or malfunctioning components
Refer to Crankcase Ventilation System Inspection/Diagnosis .
• Worn valve guides and/or valve stems
• Worn or improperly installed valve stem oil seals
Refer to Spark Plug Inspection .
• Piston rings broken, worn, or not seated properly
Allow adequate time for the rings to seat.
Replace worn piston rings, as necessary.
Refer to Cylinder Leakage Test .
• Piston and rings improperly installed or not fitted to the cylinder bore
Refer to Lower Engine Noise, Regardless of Engine Speed

2005 town and country 3.8 using oil. no leaks 2qts every 3000 miles. any ideas please?

For that type of oil consumption there must be traces of smoke at some time. If there is smoke at start-up and when you lift your foot off the pedal to slow down, the valve stem seals are leaking. If the smoke is predominantly seem under acceleration and normal driving, the oil seal rings are allowing oil into the cylinder/s. At present the oil consumption and cost (if there is no excessive smoke) will be a lit less than the repair of either of the factors I have mentioned above. Try changing to another brand of oil (synthetic oil seem to contribute to high oil consumption). Try a heavier brand of mineral oil, at least a 20W-50 or even a 60 for older engines. Go for an oil that is marketed and backed by a reputable company with a petroleum back round.

My fiesta 1.6 zetec 16v is blowing blue smoke with strong odour of petrol ,what is wrong with it ?

Hi

it sounds like it is burning oil not petrol but you will smell petrol as the oil is leaking in through the head, the valve stem oil seals will most likely have gone, very common on fords. they are very cheap bt unfortunately you have to remove the cylinder head to replace them so that means a head gasket and a new cambelt and head bolts thats where it gets expensive. in the UK you are looking at about £300 to £500 in a general garage.

there is another solution that will last for months if not years, get some STP the type that you need to heat up to get it to come out of the can, this will seal up the leaking stems and shuld stop the smoke, most people do this before they sell that car.

Valve stem oil seals often go because the car has been driven hard, but you should still expect them to go at around 80-100k miles anyway.

Hope this helps
Regards

Dan

Why is my motorcycle leaking oil from the overflow tube? I let some oil out to be sure there wasn't too much oil, but it is still leaking. It leaks when it is off on its kick stand and it leaks when I...

You have a crankcase breather hose that may be blocked, allowing excessive oil pressure to push oil out. It should be routed to the airbox. This may also be the overflow hose you are speaking about. Your oil type may not be suited to a motorcycle engine, automotive oils are NOT suitable for bike engines for many reasons, notably shared gearbox and engine oil and a wet clutch. Check function of the oil pressure switch as this should send a signal of loss or excessive oil pressure. Check your manual for correct weight and quantity and type of oil filter needed. The oil level is indicated on the stem of the oil filler cap.
Cheers.
