Question about Maytag Neptune MAH5500B Front Load Washer

1 Answer

Maytag Neptune MAH5500BWW Will not spin

My washer will not spin and sometimes gives an LR code. I followed the tests to check the Machine Control board. If I followed the steps correctly, it doesn't seem like I ever get 120V to the motor control board. The test invovles getting into Service Mode (delecates and heavy soil), selecting Board Output Test (Rinse). Then pressing stain cycle should output 120V to the motor control board. Also, I can't hear the motor control relay actuate (I can hear all of the other relays actuate).

Turns out it was the motor. The warranty is actually 10 years on my vintage Neptune. Although I had to spend 60 minutes on the phone, they ended up sending mw the replacement kit (Motor and motor controller) for free. I will do the install when it comes in. Unfortunately they would not expedite the delivery even if I volunteered to pay the up charge on shipping.

I have the same problem; my washer shuts off 45sec. after pressing Start. With the help of many blogs I was able to troubleshoot the problem. I contacted Maytag and tried to get a replacement Motor and Motor control board under 10 year warranty but they refused saying that they would replace only if I have an Authorized Service Contractor verify the problem. It would take someone all of 3 minutes to run through the same troubleshooting tests that I did and I don't think I should pay to have this done. How were you able to convince them to ship you the parts?

Maytag neptune washers do have a motor problem and they have a kit to replace the motor and motor controller.
when the motor fails, it wont wash or spin. most units have a 5 year parts warranty and should be replaced with a free part, but you will have to pay an authorized servicer to do this.
if it is over 5 years then i would call maytag and see if they will help you with an authorization for repair.
most of the time they will provide the part for free. just call the 800 # and ask for help. they wont send you the part but might give you some help with the parts.

My Maytag Neptune washer is not spinning and I tried only Spin cycle for 12 minutes and gave LR error message. Pl help?

Hi, the Maytag Neptune front load washer LR or Locked Rotor error indicates and issue with the motor drive system. The motor control board is located near the floor on the right side. See Neptune Disassembly help to remove the door and front panel to get access, if needed.

I would unplug machine, remove all connectors and reinstall a few times and retry machine in case of any oxidation on the connectors. Also, check the belt and make sure it has not popped off. There is a rear access cover you can remove to take a peek.

In addition, there is a motor drive test you can perform to see if the inner tub will rotate at 50 rpms. You should have a document with your machine that instructs how to perform this simple test and it could be located in the top console.

Depending on which machine you have... If the motor control board has failed then you may have to replace the motor and motor control board since Maytag redesigned them because they were having reliability issues with them and they decided to change the motor technology they were using. See maytag maytag Neptune motor conversion kit for more info.

I hope this helps...

My Maytag washing machine MAH5500BWW gives me an Lr error message

The LR error on your non-spinning Maytag Neptune is usually, though not always, accompanied either by a burn spot or a blown fuse on the Motor Control Board.

Maytag upgraded the motor and motor control board because this problem was so prevalent. Big rash of these a few years back... and insludes replacement instructions with the kit.

The LR code means "locked rotor" which is just a way of saying the control is not seeing the motor turning.

The image below contains the wiring diagram for this washer as you requested but there are some other things to consider.

Usually when the LR code is displayed the motor has stopped turning for some reason.
By definition the LR code means the control has tried to turn the motor but was unable to.

The error code can be caused by to large of load, to much soap/suds in the water or a problem with the spin bearing.
The cause of the LR message can be little problem like suds or a major problem like the spin bearing and sometimes it's difficult to pin down.
You don't mention in your question if the LR code occurs every load or once a week.

Try running a rinse and spin cycle empty and see if the washer completes the cycle.

The 2nd image contains the information on how to enter and run a diagnostic cycle which may help pin the source of the problem down.
This test completes all functions of the washer is a short time. It will fill, tumble, drain and spin all is a few minutes.
At the end of a successful test cycle a PA should display which means "Passed" and is what you want to see.

From another source..."Installing replacement motor, motor control harness, and motor control circut board.

Pretty easy install. On a scale of 1 to 10 (ten being hardest) I'd call it a 3.5. If you can use a screwdriver, a wrench, and have played with legos before, you can probably do this job. It took me about 3 hours to do, but this was with inferior tools, and two smoke breaks included.

Minimum tool requirements: Adjustable-head cresent wrench (8 or smaller handle), phillips head screwdriver, utility knife.

Recommended tool equirements: Small ratchet with socket set, ratcheting screwdriver with phillips head and small socket attachments, brew.

The instructions are pretty clear. Once you pull the front panel off, there are two braces at 45 degree angles on the lower corners of the washer. The instructions don't ask you to, but I would remove the brace on the left to make life easier. This gives your arm more room to work and makes it easier to pull the motor out the front.

They ask you to remove the wiring harness from the motor first and then pull the harness out with the control board. My wrench was too big to get to the bolt to remove the harness from the motor. All I did was cut the harness - since they supply a new one - then pull out the control board, then pull out the motor. As far as getting the pulley off, slip it on and off at the large wheel, this is much easier than taking it off at the small motor drive shaft. The only other thing of note is to make sure you look at the diagram for the conectors a few times before you snap it together. There are a few ways you could hook it up wrong so pay attention. There should be no loose ends when you finish. Also, I couldn't get the flange back on on the rear acess panel when closing it up, but it doesnt seem to serve muc purpose besides asthetics, so I tossed it.

The $200 for the parts and shipping was well worth it. I saved about $150-250 to do it myself...."

Maytag neptune washer model mah6500a, took the back off and the tub spins but still get the code Lr

Looks like another motor/motor control panel replacement. This machine has a faulty motor/motor control board, it has been re-engineered with a replacement. Has yours been replaced? Have you found the tech sheet behind touch panel and placed machine in service mode to test? We had the same issue, worked sporadically, didn't drain, got LR code then eventually stopped working. Check your spin in service mode, if it doesn't spin properly you should find out here. It is a very simple repair in all actuality. Contact Maytag and they will sell you the parts for a discounted price, make sure that you buy directly from Maytag, also check your boot very carefully since that part will also fail and allow water to get into the bottom of the machine where you have electronics.

Maytag mah5500bww motor/control board failure recall

I had Maytag ship a new motor and motor control board for free and installed it myself in less than an hour. There is a ten year warranty on those parts. You just have to be very firm and insist you have warranty rights by law!

sometime resistor are a bit under valued and can burn up. Dont worry about your door lock. remember Lr stands for locked rotor.????? check the winding on your motor and never over look the pump. Have a visual inside the pump for blockage look for any shorts on your washing machine. I was told they have a ten year warranty on the motor. I always test all the conponents on a w/machine before I test it. lookup this site to see if your maytag is still under warranty???? maytag.com
