Motor Blew Up

WHile using my generator the other day, the side of the motor blew out. I had been having trouble keeping it running as the pull cord seized, I fixed that and ensured that it had fresh gas and oil. Any suggestions and any idea what kind of warranty these generators have?

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I will give it to my Dad to call. I see ont he website that the engine warranty is only 3 years. i am not sure how old our machine is. A hole blew out the side of the generator and pieces went everywhere. It was like shrapnel. Very Dangerous.

Even though the warranty may be expired he will still call the company and tell them what happended. You never know there may be a recall.

    Thanks again

I have a new one with the subaru robin 10 hp engine and its making a faint knocking noise and smoke pretty bad on startup only. used a screwdriver as a stethoscope and hear no noise in block nor the ohv assembly or alternator but sounds like its coming from flywheel area. also its new and i have changed the oil at least 5 times with 10w-30 premium oil according to the manual specs, and it has fine powdery metal in the oil each time i have changed it and an occasional slither of metal. other than that it runs fine. Im afraid engine will BLOW A HOLE IN THE BLOCK also. tried 30w oil still smoke like hell on start up, thinking valve guides are bad or rings maybe. wife threw away receipt cant bring it back for another I think I got a piece O ****!

Now I look like a madman after all these replies. Coleman is still in business, they still do the camping stuff, but sold the Coleman Powermate section to the Italian company. Sorry.

  • valvestem May 11, 2010

    Correction to above:

Coleman Powermate was sold to an Italian company, not Chinese.

    Info To Your Issue:

My brother in law has a Coleman gen w/a Honda motor. He told me Coleman went out of business in Feb 08. Their stock, parts etc., was bought up by a Chinese company that he says will honor warrantees if they still carry/manufacture the particular model giving trouble. I believe also they are keeping the business in the US,at least for now. MY BIL also said that they are only going to keep up manufacture/support of the higher end models. I can ask him if he has any numbers/email to contact them if you want.

Normally they only have a 90 day warranty. But if the generator is under a year old I would contact the manufactor and see what they say.

Get two short extension cords and cut the FEMALE end off each one. Strip back the insulation on that end. Connect the two green wires to each other, and connect the two white wires to each other.

Connect one black wire to a light switch, and connect the other black wire to a 20W appliance-type incandescent light bulb. Also run one short black wire (from a cut-off end) from the second terminal on the light bulb to the second terminal on the switch, like so:

plug -- black -- switch -- black -- bulb -- black -- plug
plug -- white ----------------------------------- white -- plug
plug -- green ---------------------------------- green -- plug

Turn the switch to the OFF position.
Start the generator. Plug one plug from your new rig into an outlet on the generator. Plug the other plug from your new rig into a wall outlet supplying 120V. With the generator running, turn the switch to the ON position.

The bulb should flash for a short while, then become steady. When it's steady, that side of the generator is flashed. Repeat for the other side of the generator if it makes 240V.

Generator runs great but produces no power

On Thursday last week I had 220 amp outlet being used and a 110 amp outlet being and overloaded the generator. It turned out to be the reset breakers failed to trip and blew the capacitor. The reset breakers I would suggest replacement after 7 years very easy to do on a 5500 Valsi generator 2010 model still running and now producing electric. And of course use only regular gas non Ethanol.

I already broke one recoil starter assembly on my Astra Korea 3 kVA generator. I can start the generator, but with great effort. It takes about 6-8 pulls, and there's so much resistance that I can actually...

The easiest test to run on the generator is to remove the spark plug and see if it pulls easier. If it does then it is a compression problem. I doubt that is the case. If it does not then you need to take the generator off the motor and see if it still pulls hard.

My coleman powermate5500 mod 0525500.01 leaks oil between motor and gen. how to fix

The crank shaft seal is bad on the motor. You will need to seperate the motor from the generator to replace the seal. Depending on the seal design, you will have to open the crankcase on the output shaft side to remove the seal.

If my generator shut off due to low lubricant will it reset automatically? If not is there a reset valve/button?

The pull cord is like a starter on a car (separate from the motor/engine). If the pull cord will not turn it could be because the motor/engine is seized.

My son blew up his coleman generator - 5.5hp honda - can't get the armature off the engine shaft - any special tools needed so i can proceed with tearing down the motor

No special tool needed (usually). The armature is resting on a tapered part of the shaft. Assuming that you have removed the stator and have exposed the armature and have removed the center bolt. Apply penetrating oil to shaft so that the oil can enter between shaft and armature (wait for oil to work at least half hour). Hold piece of hardwood against metal part of armature (first one side then other) and rap very firmly with heavy hammer. Be careful not to hit metal directly or wiring. If the oil has done its work, the armature will come off with first couple of hits. If not add more oil and wait. Then try again. Good luck.

I am interested in a generator that can light a 3-bedroom hse and a chauff cutter

Your cutter machine may use more power than your whole house depending on the size of motor. A one horsepower motor 115v will use about 3000 watts to start and about 1000watts to run. To estimate how much power you need, add up all the watts that you will use at home and add to that estimated wattage of the cutter motor (motor will use 3x rated wattage to start plus loss of power thru the extension cord). Buy a generator that will give you needed power and still have a 25 percent reserve. If you need 2000 watts on a continued basis, the 2800 watt may be good, however I would be more comfortable with a 3500 watt if the price was right because of the cutter machine. I would consider converting the cutter to gas power and buy a smaller generator to save on gas since you will be most likely running the generator far longer to power the house. Good luck

HAVE A TRANSFER SWITCH IN MY HOME TO PLUG A PORTABLE GENERATOR TO. PROBLEM IS WORKED GREAT BUT WAS ON OTHER SIDE OF HOUSE. I HAD A 4' CORD BUT BOUGHT A 80' CORD TO PLUG INTO THE TRANSFER SWITCH NOW WHEN...

Hello, what you are not telling us is the size of the wires in the 4' cord and the 80' cord. However, you are correct in your thinking that the longer cord is cutting back on the available power that you have. Yes, if you extend the length, then the wire size in the cord has to be increased as well. To give you a size we will need to know the generator size. Having said that, an 80' cord is going to be a BIG amount of money. You might want to tell yourself how much money you are saving pulling the generator around. If you have to use the generator a lot, you might consider installing a cable to run the generator with.

The pull cord is locked, can only pull out 5 inches....why?

Could be motor locked up or cord caught in the rewinding mechanism. Remove top engine cover and see if cord pulls now. If not then in winder. If it does see if you can turn the motor over by hand with cover off. If not maybe engine locked up. Did the engine run low on oil? if so when motor cooled, things may have locked up. Try removing spark plug, and light oil to cylinder and let soak.Turn engine with wrench.

I have the same generator, and I have learned a lot about it. I talked to a teck who works on them. He told me that they come from the factory set to too high of an RPM. He said to run for about two hours and then at 1/2 load set the RPM to produce 60 HZ. The extra RPMs are real rough on them.

There are three ways to do this. You can use a frequency meter if you have one. Some frequency meters will require you to build a simple resistor divider or use a small transformer to reduce line voltage to a few volts. You might also require a simple RC filter. You could use a tack on the motor, or you could conect a clock that has a 120 AC motor (dial display type) to the generator. Compare the clock to a digital watch. The clock will either be slow, right on, or fast depending on the frequency of the generator.

The spring that controls the sensitivy of the govenor often requires an initial adjustment on these generators when they are new. If the RPMs are unsteady, goes up and down when the unit is lightly loded after runing under a decent load, then adjust the mount point for the spring by the carb linkage next to the fins on the motor, this is between the electric generator and the motor and higher than the generator. Once you get the spring adjusted so that the RPMs are steady regardless of load you should not have to mess with it again.

Once you get the govenor spring adjusted, and the frequency set to 60 HZ you should be able to run anything from this generator (TV, computer, what ever), as long as you stay below the maximum toal power.

Be careful not to apply more than 1/2 of maximum load to each side of the two 120 volts of the 240 volts. If you do not understand that last statement get someone who knows electricity to explain it to you.

Be aware that motors draw several times more than running wattage when they start. Microwave ovens draw huge amount of power when they start.

Try not to go above 4000 watts for long periods of time. The plastic on the back of these electric generators tends to melt.

If you are going to load this above 1/2 load on a hot day, have a big box fan blow on the motor and electric generator. Note the front of the motor by the pull roap has a fan behind the black housing. This fan takes in air and blows it out over the fins of the motor towards the electric generator. Do not have the box fan fight this direction of air flow. Have it blow at a diagnal from the front of the motor opisite the side for the air cleaner, by the housing for the fan, and also onto the electric generator.

These generators are very noisy so do use ear protection perferably both plugs and over the ear at the same time when you are near them.

To keap this generator reliable run it for at least 10 minutes every 4 months. Use only Castrol HD 30 oil if the temperature is above 40 F and only Castrol 0W-30 european formula "made in Germany" for temperatures below 40 F, If the temp. is going to go above and below 40 F use the 0W-30. The Castrol 0W-30 must say "made in Germany" on the back of the bottle. Look two lines above the bar code. Change the oil once a year or every 25 hours of use.

These air cooled motors that do not have an oil pump and do not have an oil filter are real rough and demanding on the oil. There are very few oils that can provide the protection these motors require.

After you run it let it cool. Only after it cools, drain all the gas from the tank. Run the carb dry (until the unit stops). Pull the spark plug and spray Sta-Bil foaming oil into spark plug hole. Put a clean rag over spark plug hole and pull roap several times. Replace plug, pull roap lightly until resistance of the begining of a compression stroke is felt. Both valves will be closed. This protects valve springs, and insures no condensation in cylinder. Store indoor in a heated location. You might want to remove the gas tank and let it air out in an outdoor garage for a month or so, so no smell of gas gets into the house.

Never run a generator in a building. Carbon monoxide has no smell and will kill.
