Xbox 360 Making Odd Sounds and Not Reading Disc

So I turn on my 360, place a perfectly unscratched disc into the tray, close it up, and then I get all these weird noises that sound like some dying seagull. It says that it's reading the disc, but it never stops reading the disc. I recently flew from San Francisco to Mexico with it, and it passed through some X-rays. It also may have been dropped a couple times, but it wasn't that far from the ground, and it was enclosed in a carrying case. I can't tell what may have caused it or what I should do. Please help!

I have the exact same problem but i haven't travelled around the world and my xbox 360 hasn't been through any x-rays at all.
I put in an unscratched game and it says 'Reading'. Then all of a sudden i says 'Open Tray', like thier isnt a game in thier already! And sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
    WTF!!

I need help on this one.

dammit microsoft! mines doing the same thing. quite annoying. i just bought a new game and borrowed another new one from a friend and cant play either! does microsoft have any answers on this yet?

We have had the same problem, we are on our third console now!
Luckily Our xbox has only been about 6 months old when it's done this, so was still under warranty.

If it's still under warranty, then i would suggest sending it back, if not there is a step by step quide here:
    http://reviews.ebay.com/How-to-Fix-Xbox-...

BUT it does mean taking ur xbox apart!

I said to my Oh that i think it's because we play alot of Dvd's on the xbox, and he always ends up falling asleep, then the dvd is stuck on the main menu, constantly whirring!
But i read on another site, that it can be due to the console getting too hot and melting the solder!

hope i've been of some help.
    Good Luck!

My console wont read any of my discs

Typically its a problem with the disc tray, a variety of solutions can be gently tapping on the top of the xbox immediately after the disc tray closes. Another suggestion is, and don't do this very often, but when the disc tray closes, immediately turn your xbox 90 degrees backwards so the Disc tray is facing up at the ceiling. If these fail, you may simply just have to play with the disc tray, grab it while closing, dont tug too much, slam it closed really fast. Microsoft really is **** when it comes to making things last, but these should work somewhat, you might just have to buy a new xbox if they don't ever work.

Tray won't close

Use the following steps to close the disc tray on an original Xbox 360 console.
Step 1: Remove the disc from the tray Step 2: Make sure the faceplate is on correctly
The faceplate is the plastic piece on the front of your console.
  • Press firmly around the edges of your faceplate to snap it into place (make sure it is flush with the rest of the console). If the faceplate is not on correctly, the disc tray won't close.
  • If you find that the faceplate is the problem, please contact Xbox Support to order a replacement faceplate.
If this does not resolve your issue, please try step 3. Step 3: Press the eject buttonTry closing the disc tray by pressing the eject button. If the disc tray successfully closes, open the tray and insert a disc. Now try opening and closing the tray with a disc in the tray.
Note Make sure that the disc isn't sticky and doesn't have any labels that could prevent the tray from closing.
If your disc drive still will not close, please try step 4. Step 4: Move the disc drive tray
  1. Gently move the tray up and down, and then from side to side.
  2. Press the eject button on your Xbox 360 console. If your disc drive still will not close, you need to have your console repaired.
  3. Step 5: Request a repair If the disc tray still won't close properly, your Xbox 360 console needs to be repaired.

My xbox wont read discs, when i put the disc and close the tray, it says its reading the disc and then just says "open tray" as if not even reading the disc at all

take a can of air and gently blow some into the drive. If that doesnt fix it then at that point its going to be either a problem with the laser in the drive or you can replace the dvd drive itself. Either way you go, try Ebay cause you can usually find parts for the 360 cheaper then most places.

My Xbox 360 Halo 3 edition hardly reads any disc successfully!

This most likley a weak laser .
8 mw 633 nm laser diodes fail in stages
as they get weaker the cd ups voltage
to the laser diode till you get to full gain, affter that
it's time for a new laser .Good news
there cheap 30.00-40.00 and not too
hard to swap out yourself .
