I think ur gear shift is not normal i.e according to the speed. Shift gears according to the recommended speed. This will helps from preventing the pre worning out of the chain. And also improves ur mileage.
If you have the money, have the guy do it and get it over with. Ask him if the sprockets also need changing. Loosing a chain while driving can be dangerous. So can losing the front tire. Always make sure the front tire has tread.

chain will stretch with use...keep it adjusted...rest chainsaw with blade on block of wood (not running spark plug lead off) adjust chain by loosening side bolt/s then on inside at front adjust screw till chain is tight then retighting bolt/s lift chain and with gloves on check you can still turn chain by hand..
