I have a GE refrigerator (model GBS20HBSAWW) and the original fan for the compressor coil wasn't working. So I bought a new fan, put it in, and it still doesn't work. I have 12V coming out bet

White to red should read 12Vdc. Since you read the correct voltage and used white as the reference, you have your neutral. This can only mean that the manufacturer has shipped out a bad new part. Re-order and send the other back for exchange or or order it here.

Thanks for your reply. I'm going to re-order a new fan, but I think there may be something wrong with the signal before it goes to the fan. Do you know how these fans turn on and off? I know that there is always around 12V being supplied to the fan, but what actually turns it on, and can I monitor this some how? Thanks.

The fan should kick on when the compressor kicks on.

  • nick Nov 05, 2012

Alright. Is there anything else I can check besides the voltage. What about the blue wire?

I would just get a replacement fan.

SOURCE: freezer and refrigerator not cold fan working but

I'm ready to help you when you are. Zero may just be off on that model but if fans run then the compressor is also getting power and overheating. The start relay and components that keep the compressor going are what important now. Don't leave plugged in or the internal overload may damage. I will wait for a reply, Sea Breeze

SOURCE: refrigerator does seem like its working right

Your refrigerator compressor is either pumping or it is not. Set the refrigerator to low temperature, pull it out and listen for a while to see it the compressor is coming on. If it is coming on then there may be a freon leak or the internal coils may be iced up. If it is not coming on, then either there is no power to the coompressor, or the compressor itself is defective. Use a voltmeter at the compressor to check for voltage. There is also an add on device to start stuck compressors from your local HIVAC jobber store.

check hot gas valve to make sure it is not bypassing when in freeze mode this will not let the evaporator plate get cold enough. need to check refrigerant pressers.

This sounds like the relay has gone on the compressor. Call your local appliance parts store
(no model no. needed) and ask for a hard start kit. Instructions are on kit.
I use ERP 410 powerstart relay capacitor and over load. See it has everything and is much better than the original.
Remove the back cover, pull the original relay off the compressor pins, cut the two wires and install according to instructions. Very easy job.

A.C.; Can you tell if the fan is operating? If not that could cause the problem, but it is most likely in the defrost system: this might help you troubleshoot which component is bad:

The defrost heater is easy to check with a ohm meter. http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/freezer/check/defrostheater.php If you have continuity, then it is good.

http://www.ehow.com/how_4504020_test-refrigerator-defrost-timer.html is instructions on how to test the timer.

http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/check/defrosthermo.php is instruction on how to test the defrost thermostat.

You should also check to make sure the the condenser coils are clean and that air flow is good over it. I.E. the fan is operating, and not a lot of debrie on or around the condenser coils.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like your coils are dirty which will cause inadequate cooling due to reduced heat exchange at the coils. Also check to make sure fan is running (next to compressor and should be running when compressor runs). The fact that your ice maker makes ice at all suggests that compressor runs, therefor no freon problems. Problem should be easily fixed with correct diagnosis. Hope this helps.

Freezer frosts up and stops cooling after approximately 2 weeks

With your new timer in hand look and find a slotted screw driver head that you can turn. That is to manually advance the timer. Now put the new one in and advance it to engage the compressor and fan. Might be in the middle of defrost mode. Your unit goes through 3 defrost modes in a 24 hour period. And each mode last for 20 minutes. Once you do this I could help further if that was the case. Okay ken

TFX24PRXBWW GE Profile Refrigerator - energy use?

I dont know how to locate these specs for you, modern refrigerators are much more efficient for a couple of reasons. Most new units have a Computer that controls the defrost cycle whereas older units have timers that defrost every 8 hours of on comp run time regardless of whether it needs defrosting. The new ADC (adaptive defrost control) can better monitor the frost on the coils to defrost less (in the defrost cycle it consumes 5x as many watts as when its cooling. Also most new refrigs, especially new GE units have much more efficient fan motors now also, however they too are computer controlled and when they fail they are expensive. Also the very high end new Counter depth models (in the $2500+ range) have a new variable speed compressor. This gives the compressor the ability to run at a low, med, and high speed, reducing even more the watts that will be drawn in normal operation when the fan motors are on low and the compressor too. If you have any other questions let me know ill be glad to advise.

P.S. Buy an extended warranty with any new appliance you purchase! Trust me!
