be sure to have Maxtor drive for your OS and PC model.
    try using different USB port.
remove USB Universal serial Bus controller from Hardware device manager in Control Panel/ system/ Hardware Tab/ device manager
    and reinstall.
Try connecting same device to another PC
If Maxtor is already formatted be sure your windows canmange same file system (FAT NTFS)

External HDD no longer recognized by new win7 PC

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Try a different "data" cable between your computer and the external disk-drive.

If there is an external power-supply, borrow a "multimeter", and test that the power-supply is supplying power (correct voltage and correct amperage).

Try connecting it to another computer.

Disassemble it, and disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter. Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, and see if the disk is working.

If it still is under warranty, either your local retail store, or Maxtor/Seagate will honour the warranty, and replace it.

Comparing the list of requirements, the ONLY questionable one is the requirement that the external drive does NOT have a sleep mode...
The Maxtor MIGHT have that and not be compatibleas a result. ALL the other requirements seem to be met assuming you are using the external power adapter on the Maxtor..

My maxtor external hard drive has stopped working. There is a chance that you can recover data using a USB to IDE or SATA Adapter Cable to recover your data they cost about $30 if you cant get hard drive to power with adapter chances are it has crashed there are places that can get data off hard drive but they are very pricey hope this helps.

Can a external hard drive with a power supply issue be fixed?

the data on the drive should hopefully be safe as it sounds like it is the drive enclusure that has failed here (not the drive)

your data should be intact if the drive hasn't failed.

however to access the data is a different matter, as I am unsure how maxtor deal with this, to do it manually you would put the drive into a working enclosure or connect it to a functioning HDD adapter (for your drive type)

however to do this the drive would need to be removed from the enclosure (voiding the warranty)

hope this helps

If you can get a 3rd party disk utility like DiskWarrior because if the disc information has corrupted the computer cannot see it, the utility will re write this and if the drive is OK it will re appear

My One touch drive just stopped working.

It seems That this drive has not been recognized by your computer.
Try this; because the drive is a "removable device" disconnect switch off reconnect and switch on.This will send a signal to your computer that a new device has been Connected and perhaps you may need to follow the install wizard instructions. you may have to do this for a number of occations but your computer will soon adopt your new external device as a valuable family member.
I hope this will solve your problem.
Good luck

If you really want those files, try DriveSavers.com. They do wonders with dead hard drives (known to have recovered files off a burned hard disk). But it comes with a hefty price. So check their website, http://www.drivesavers.com/.
