What pilot light assy. do I need to buy for model# 640y0rt4, water heater ??? please wont stay lit

check that the flame sensor is clean. It would be a stiff piece of wire that would sit right over where the pilot lite is. If it is dirty...it wont sense if there is a flame....and if it dosnt sense a flame....it wont let the pilot lite to turn on.

On A.O. Smith water heater model BTH 199 100 where is the heat sensor rod located ?

Parts list:
http://www.hotwater.com/lit/partslists/197728-004.pdf
Flame rod, flame sensor sits next to igniter inside combustion chamber. This can be cleaned with sandpaper. Do not touch with fingers. Purpose of flame rod is to detect whether ignition has caused actual, sustainable fire inside the combustion chamber.
If sensor is bad, or no ignition is detected after 2-3 attempts, then 'no ignition' error is given.
Bad gas control valve, bad-or-dirty flame rod-sensor, low gas pressure, misaligned rod, dirty combustion parts, etc

Rheem 27 ignites for about a second when cold tap turned on

When you ignites, I assume you mean it fires. If so you have a dirty or defective flame sensor. Usually they can be cleaned with steel wool or a piece of fine sand paper, do not rub aggresively!

As the term implies, it is supposed to varify that the gas has indeed ignited and sends a signal to the gas valve to remain open. If the sensor has a built up film from dirt or moisture it does not properly sense the flame and shuts the gas valve off to prevent a build up of gas in the burner box.

I have a Richmond 40 gal water heater model# 6G40PVW-40PF manufactured 5/2010 and it wont't stay lit. I don't have the owners manual as we purchased our home in 12/2011 and it was a foreclosu

Well I you have the problem resolved by now, but I will answer anyhow. This just happened to me yesterday with the same water heater that you have. My problem was that the flame sensor was dirty and not picking up that the burner was lit, so it shuts everything down and goes into lockout mode. I had a similar problem with my furnace lighting system. It is called flame rectification. What actually happens is the flame itself allows a small current to flow through it, so the flame sensor actuall makes electrical contact with the burner. The control senses this connection and knows then, that the flame is on. If it doesn't sense this connection, it thinks the flame is out, so it must shut off the gas valve to prevent a possible explosion. Take your burner out and clean up everything in there, being careful not to break the small glass bulb inside, which is another safety device. Fine emery cloth of a wire brush will clean up the flame sensor good. Also wire brush the burner itself, since this is the other end of the rectification circuit.

Sometimes it doesn't light at all other times during use the hot water goes off and the box keeps flashing green as it continues to spark

it sounds like the flame sensor is dirty or faulty. when the pilot lights the flame sensor rod recognises the flame to allow the main gas valve to open and ignite the burners. you can clean the flame sensor with some steel wool or sandcloth

Water heater will light but only stays lit for about 5 seconds then shuts off

sounds like the flame sensor isn't detecting the flame. It could be dirty or broken.

It's normally dirty so that could be fixed easily. Look in your owners manual to see where the flame sensor is (it usually looks like a metal rod with a bend on the end and just one wire coming out the bottom).

Turn off the power, remove the sensor, clean it with emery cloth and replace it, turn on and if that was the problem it should work just fine now.

Sounds like it could be a dirty or bad flame sensor.
When the burner lights ,there is a flame sensor in the flame and it is suppose to sense the flame and send a signal back to the control board which will keep the gas valve open, if it gets dirty or is bad it doesn't send the signal back to the board and the board will shut the gas valve off and after three tries it will lock out the furnace and you have to reset it to get it to work again.
The flame sensor looks like a wire and it's in the flame usually it will get gas deposits on it, then it won't work.
You can clean this sensor with an extra fine piece of steel wool, but before you attempt to do this DISCONNECT ALL POWER TO THE FURNACE.
