Did it work in the past? Are you sure your system can write DvD's? Click Start/My Computer and look at the description of the DvD Drive. Does it say DvD-RW or DvDrw which means it can write a DvD? Look on the side of the laptop at the dvd drive, does it say DvDrw or DvD-RW or DvD Rewritable? If so that means it is capable of writing Dvd's.
If it says just DvD or DvD Rom that means it can only read dvd's.
Make sure the dvd you put in the drive is blank. I've been on many service calls where they said the dvd was not writing and found out that the media was not blank.
Try another DVD-RW drive because it sounds like the laser is going bad. Burning requires alot of power from the laser. Playing DVD or playing cd's doesn't require much so thats why it would play those.
The drive may be dirty or jammed. Use an expanded paper clip. Insert the wire into the little hole on the front of the unit. That will engage a manual switch. Gently open the unit all the way. Now press the button and let it close by itself. If this doesn't work it may also be an electronic failure.
