Question about RCA 20F420T 20" TV

Tv Volume is Locked

Our Hand-Me-Down Sharp Unytron television suddenly stopped letting us control the volume. It only lets us have three settings; no volume, half volume, and full volume. The problem is, the half-volume is still WAY to loud.
There was no remote, but we have been using a Radio Shack 5-in-One Remote just fine for over a year. The problem is the same whether we use the remote, or just click the TV itself.
We can't really afford a new TV right now, so any help would be greatly apricated.

I tried unplugging it for an hour, and the problem still persists. Anymore ideas?

  • rachelcreate Jan 05, 2009

also, there is no menu, as far as I can tell, or none that I can get to without the original remote.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, pls post back the exact model number of the Sharp Unytron, something like 13RV629 or 20SB50.

Offhand, let's try the basics/easy ones. Try to see if you could enter the MENU/SETTINGS/AUDIO. The idea is to reset the audio controls back to default factory settings. Normally, there would be a choice for personal settings, try to reset that also. I suspect that there is nothing wrong with the Sharp, it was just programmed to operate like that by the previous user. If the universal remote does not have a MENU button, see if there is one at the front/side panel controls. Once inside the MENU, the channel up/down and the volume up/down would control the selections.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Try first unplugging tv power plug for a while, so that you can reset the TV, then verify that your all in one is controlling the TV, eventually reinsert code.

If the problem is none of the above, then it is a faulty TV, to find out the TV must be tested with original remote.

Try unpluging the tv fot a hour and see if the settings reset. also look in the menu if you can find a settings reset or factory defaults to that direction.

I beleve there are three settings personal,video,game..

Without the remote, some TV's are useless.  Is there a menu button on the TV itself?  If so, you will have to determine what buttons do what.  For example, volume up and down may let you scroll through the menu while channel up and down may let you go left or right in the menu.  If you only have volume, chanel and input/source buttons, you may need to order a new remote to solve this.

No remote, channels locked on smart tv

On this set, the volume buttons are the same as the menu button on your remote. The two channel buttons work the same as the scrolling arrows on your remote. It will take some practice, but to turn on the menu, press both volume buttons at once. Then practice using the volume controls to scroll. Once you have the hang of it, you can simply use these four buttons the same way you would have used your remote. If you cannot figure it out on your own, come back here, let me know, and I will sit down and map it out completely for you.

Hope this helps in some small way!

Sounds like it's locked. Either hold the remote control "DISP" down for 3 seconds, or press it repeatedly about 10 times & it'll unlock.

Why does my RCA TV cycle through channels on its own?

Hi there!
I think your remote may be at fault. Liquid spill or sweat from the hand accumelates on the inside over some time and then becomes sticky. Some of the buttons may be permanently activated. Then other functions won't work. Have someone check it for you or if familiar yourself. Regards, JUS004

Forgot v-chip code

Sharp has several locking and V-chip commands but one of these three possibilities should work.
Newer Combos With "Time Limiter" Feature
If the "Secret Number" is forgotten, simultaneously press the STOP, RESET, and VOL up buttons on the front panel of the set.
This disables both the "Channel Lock" and the "Time Limiter" features.

CTV's Lock Mode---Blue screen and display says,Parental Control Rating Unknown
Try This: Hold Channel up and down on the set while pluging in AC cord.
Or Try This: On the set, press volume up and channel down at the same time.

CTV's V-Chip Release
When screen asks you to "input secret number" press and hold channel up and down on the TV set until message disappears. Press menu 2 times to exit.
Hope this helps!

TV will suddenly change channels, change volume, or go to set up screen by itself

yes and this is a common problem! First lets check out the obvious/ when theis fault starts to happen take out the batteries out of the remote control. If the problem stops then you need a new remote. If the proplem persist the remote sensor assy is bad in the tv set. Ive never heard a cable box causeing a motherboard to act up?? Wait arent mother boards in computers?? lol. believe me you need to tell the tv msn to replace the rmote sensor. Now in an extremly rare cases the microprocessor was causing the problem BUT highly unlikly. Good Luck
