Question about PC Desktops

My modem sometimes work and sometime show only two lights i.e. power and ethernet and do not connect to my dsl internet

Do you know if you have line issues with your phone company? If you're at the outer edges of DSL range from the Central Office, your connection might be dropping. The fact that the power and ethernet lights stay lit shows that the connection might not be on your end. Does the connection get reestablished when you reboot the modem? You may have to get your provider to do connectivity tests on your line.

Emachines Will not detect ethernet cable


With the machine on and the cable connected on both ends (1 to computer and the other end to the Router or Modem that needs to be powered up) look where the cable plugs into your computer. Is there a green or orange light on. There may be two. Normally one that stays on steady is the CONNECT. This one is normally green color LED. When Data is being transmitted a second LED will be flickering showing data transfer. If you have no LED lights showing directly by the Ethernet cable, try another cable. Reminder: also make sure you have power on the router/ cable/dsl modem.

Troubleshooting DSL Modems


Ever look at your DSL Modem and wonder what all those lights mean? Why do some flash, while others remain solid? What if your lights are different colors? How do you tell if your DSL Modem is working correctly?<br /> <br /> Each light on your DSL Modem represents a function. The light is an indication of whether that function is working properly. Sometimes the placement and title of each function can vary by modem manufacturer, but they are pretty standard in interpetation. If you look closely your modem, you might find that each function is labeled in small print to help identify them.<br /> <br /> A standard DSL Modem has a light for power, internet, ethernet, link and wireless connection. A healthy DSL Modem will have a steady green light that does not blink or flutter for all features other than internet, ethernet and wireless. A flashing or fluttering light indicates movement and useage. When you are connected to your DSL Modem wireless, the light for this feature will blink indicating a connection and/or active useage. If the internet connection is working properly the color of the light will be green. If the connection is working but experincing a problem the light can turn to yellow or orange. If the connection fails, the light on the DSL Modem can be red or absent depending on the problem causing the trouble. If your service is turned off by the provider, more than likely the light will be "off".<br /> <br /> If your lights turn a different color, are absent or your internet connection fails try power cycling your modem before reporting the trouble to your provider. Power cycling helps the DSL Modem to reset its connection and repair your internet services.<br /> <br /> If you are using a DSL Modem alone to connect to the internet (no additional router) you can power cycle it by first turning off your computer and then unplug the modem itself from the power source at the wall. Wait for 1 to 2 minutes and then plug it back into the power source and wait for the warm up to finish before rebooting the pc.<br /> <br /> The DSL Modem should go through the normal warm up procedures of blinking lights, making them all stable and solid green ect. You will know when its finished warming up when the features are set at solid green (other than eithernet, internet and wireless connection as explained above). When the modem finished the warm up, reboot your computer and check your internet connection.<br /> <br /> Power cycling your DSL Modem can help keep your connection healthy and running at optimal speeds.<br />

Choose your equipment wisely. There are many types of wireless routers, and they are not all created equal. Some of the lower end wireless routers are very basic, and will limit your home network to speed of 56 megabits per second (Mbps.) This is really not a very fast speed. If your access points will be very far apart, consider getting a router with ultra-range abilities, or a dual-band router. Also, while you're at the store, be sure to pick up one wireless access point for each computer you intend to connect to your network.

Remove your DSL or cable modem from the power supply.

Remove the Ethernet cable which connects your DSL or cable modem to your computer from the computer, but leave it plugged into the back of your modem. This cable looks something like a phone cord on the ends, but with much larger connectors and a larger, round cable. Do not remove the phone cord from the modem which is plugged into the telephone jack on your wall.

Connect the loose end of the Ethernet cable to the internet port on the back of your router. This port should be clearly marked, and will probably be a different color than the other ports.

Reconnect your modem to the power source. To protect it, plug it into the same surge protector which guards your computer.

Plug the Ethernet cable which came with your router into the Ethernet connector on the network card on the back of your computer. Then plug the other end into one of the Ethernet network ports on the back of the router.

Plug the router's power cord into the power supply. This device should also be protected by a surge protector. If you run out of plugs, it is well worth ten or twenty dollars to invest in a second surge protector.

Check the lights on the front or top of your router. The power light should be on, as well as the internet light, the wireless light, the security light, and a light for one of your Ethernet network connections. Check to see if any lights are off, flashing, or red or amber in color. This will indicate that the router is having a problem. If any lights are not on as they should be, check your cable connections to ensure that they are securely connected. Repeat the setup steps if necessary.

Install the software provided by your wireless router's manufacturer.

My e machine crashed i reinstall win xp now it will not connect to the internet using dsl device manager said that modem was working also there are no com ports showing


HI jar5. Did you install the ethernet driver after the Windows reinstallation? The DSL modem uses 2 interfaces. The USB and the Ethernet. YOu can use the modem´s Driver to use it thru the USB or you can use another computer go to the emachines´website and under support or drivers select your model and download the drivers because probably you also dont have sound, etc. I hope this helps. Cannot connect to internet. I had internet connection over telephone modem before Hard drive crashed. I replaced HD and could not connect to internet. Dell was no help at all. I signed up for Verizon DSL...


I bet you are using the phone modem that canme in your machine. You need to connect the Network card ( Ethernet Card) and make sure the drivers are working. Find it is System, Hardware, device manager, look for ethernet.
Connection icon and see if the netcard driver is installed.Connect the cat5 cable that was sent to you with the DSL modem box. It chould be a yellow cable... It only fits one way and in a maked plug on the DSL modem and into the network card in the computer. Everything there after should go automatically.

try to reset first the modem before checking the cable maybe your modem need to be reset... if not work... try to unplug for a minute then plug it again... then try to use your internet..

Can not get internet connections


First try to reboot your router ... just unplug it for about 30 seconds and plug it back in. See if your router shows back up (assuming you are wireless) or if connected via a CAT5 cable your internet connection gets restored.

If that does not work ... sometimes its helpful to reboot your DSL/Cable modem. First unplug the router, then unplug the modem, after the modem come back up, plug the router in.

power down cable modem, router, and computer. Connect ethernet cable from modem to router/ and connect ethernet cable from router to PC. Power up cable modem first, after modem shows connectivity, plug in router. After router shows internet connectivity, start computer. Be sure that you LAN card operable

I can't get my acer laptop to connetct to the internet


cannot connect to the internet is a very tedious process. first try to contact your isp provider. are you using a wired connection or wireless? is it a dialup or dsl connection? try doing this first
turn off and unplugged both your modem and computer. once unplugged press and hold the power button of your computer for 5 seconds to drain all information in the memory. next you will press the power button of your modem (unplugged) to remove all information. then after 5 minutes try to plug the power cable of your modem and turn on your modem. wait till the modem lights stabilizes and gets green then plug back your computer and then turn it on. try connecting again
try also checking your ethernet port whether it has a light at the back indicating it is working
do this also
click start>run
at the run windows type cmd
then type this ping 127.0.0.1
if you get a 0%loss that means to say that your lan or ethernet card is good and working.
try resetting your internet explorer. pullup an explorer then click on tools>internet options>advance>reset or restore
check also under internet option under connection tab lan settings. click on lan settings and make sure nothing is checked in any of the box on that page.

We recently got high speed internet from Qwest. It will not work. It keeps saying that the can't "ping" it. All light are green; power DSL, and the Ethernet. The internet is not. I have...


The DSL router/modem will receive an address from your ISP (Qwest) and will assign an address to the connected PC.

There should be a cable that goes from your DSL modem to your PC. It'll either be a USB cable (flat rectangular plug on the PC end), or a RJ45 (looks like a wider telephone plug).

If there is neither connection between the DSL modem and your PC, then the PC can't "talk" to the DSL modem, so it's not getting an address from the DSL modem.
