Based on your description, it likely isn't a coincidence. Your dishwasher drain hose likely enter's the disposer, correct ?
Pull the drain hose off and look into the spout the hose attached to on the disposer to see if it is clogged with anything.
If the disposer itself is jammed, that could potentially prevent both the dishwasher from draining and the disposer from functioning.
**Remember to unplug or turn off the power to the disposer and dishwasher before attempting any service...safety first**
