21 year old GE TBX18SLS top freezer refrigerator. Stopped cooling completely and lost all food in fridge/freezer. Cleaned out underneath and found compressor and fan turn on but only stay on for approx...

Yes that does sound like very likely the relay is bad,by removing it from the compressor and turning it upside down you can test it using a ohm meter. When turned upside down the meter display should be ZERO ohms resistiance. Also the thermodisc overload should be ZERO ohms when measureing it on the wire that slips onto the compressor pin and on the other wire . Oh to measure the relay the meter leads go into the 2 terminals where it plugs onto compressor.

NOW the bad news the original parts are no longer available,but their is a aftermarket relay/overload combo that would work its sold under the SUPCO name brand and is part number RO41 it should be available at your local appliance parts store or online at;

Good luck,

Not sure how to wire Supco RO41 Relay/Overload Combo to Maytag side by side Fridge MSD2454GRW. It's a universal part, so it's different than the manufacturer's part, but I just want to see if...

while i loath those RO41 because your compressor will be dead SOON. The 2 black wires connect to the wires were connected to the wiring on FACTORY RELAY AND OVERLOAD WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY CONNECTED TO WHERE THE RED/WHITE/AND BLACK WIRES WITH THE TERMINALS NOW ARE.

my advice though is throw that thing in the trash and get factory OEM relay and overload

sounds like you have a unit that may have bit the big one... there is one more alternative if your willing to give it a try.. the sale a 3-n-1 start assist that goes on the unit.. it has the capacitor and relay built into device and in a sense is a hard start for a froze compressor ... its last resort and i have seen some work for years after installation and others within a day back to same originally results needing a new compressor ... they are easy to install and actually have a diagram on them... you will have 2 power wires that just wire into the current power wires... supco 3-n-1 is one brand to try.. whereever you got the relays should have these devices... again its last resort but may save you several hundred dollars right now... good luck

Not cooling either side. compressor not running

Most likely you will need a Supco 3 in 1. It's a capasitor, relay and overload assy. You can buy the exact replacment at parts #4 and #6. They cost a total of $83.35 plus shipping. If you go with a Supco 3 in 1 like I have suggested you can find it at for $21.95. It's very easy to install. It only has 3 wires that go on the compressor and two that you connect the power to. The instruction are on the part and very easy to understand. The 3 in 1 is also a much stronger part and will out last the factory part by a long shot. Good luck.

you can replace the relay with a 3 in 1 made by supco. i generally just use a supco 0410.

it is a start relay, overload, and start capacitor all in one. works great for residential systems.

I have 20 yeras old Maytag model GT1928PVCW which we were very happy. Unfortauantly it just stop cooling. Fans steel working but no cooling. Is it possible to repair

Yes it is, for sure. We just need to diagnose the problem. First, if you unit has ice on the back inside wall of the freezer, you have a defrost problem that can mostlilely be solved by replacing the defrost heater. If not, we will move on.
If you can read a wiring diagram, go to and enter your model number. This will bring up a blown up diagram so you can locate evey part or you unit plus your in luck, it also has wa wiring diagram included. By looking a the wiring diagram, there are only four thing that will prevent your compressor from running.
  1. Temp control
  2. Defrost timer
  3. Run cap.,Over load, PTC Relay
Checking temp control/ Take the two wires from part and connect together. If the unit starts running, you will need to replace control.
Defrost timer/ It has a round piece in the front of it with a slot on each side of the round piece that will let you turn it in only one direction. You can take a flat blade screw driver and turn. This advances the timer. Turn until you hear it click. If unit starts running, replace timer.
Run capacitor, overload and PTC relay/ If you can hear the compressor clicking around every 5 to 10 seconds, you will need to replace the part. The bast thing to do is replace all three pieces with a Supco 3 in 1. You can search Supco 3 in 1 and find one on the web. If you can use a meter, you might want to check your compressor to see if the windings are grounded. Take anyone of the 3 post coming out of the compressor and check continuity between it and ground. If it has continuity, it's bad and will cost a lot to replace. Also check for continuity between each post. If there is continuity, this is great and the Supco 3 in 1 will fix the problem. I have made this as simple as I know how but I also know that it's not simple to peolpe that don't work on these everyday like myself. I hope you the best and good luck. If you have anymore questions, please respond back and I'll do my best.

Compressor problem, installing the Supco 3-in-1 Relay

Hi, If the 3 posts are top center and bottom right left, the black wire goes top the top center post. The red wire will go to the bottom right and the white goes to bottom left.
If the posts are bottom center and top right left, the black goes on bottom center and the red goes top left. The white goes top right.
If you do not see a capacitor, disregaurd the wires in the 3-1
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
