Open Question

The circuit board has 16 IRF1404 transistors with surface mount resistors connected to #1 terminal of each transistor. The resistors are marked 100. Resistance of resistors varies from 10 to 10000 ohms. What is the value of resistors supposed to be?

Replace the parts with the original ones, a .5 ohm difference on a resistor on the video circuits will cause the unit not to work correctly.

you should of recived a 0.01ohm resistor it is wite and sayes sony on it.
its a flame proof resistor that needs to be the very same
look for it on the pcb test it its probly open right.
ask them to send you the right part.

if r 11 is bad you should really check the bearing on the tub you will probably find it to be bad or going bad causing the moter to pull more amps causing r 11 to burn out.

try mailing the manufacturer

hot transistors are usually shorted out, or driving a short!!

a multimeter across the 3 transistor legs (TO-3 transistors have 2 legs & the case which is the 3rd leg) will reveal if they're dead (remove the transistors first as the circuit may give a false reading) - if you get a zero ohms reading between any of the legs it's dead - don't forget to check the smaller driver transistors too,, as a dead main transistor will kill its smaller driver transistor

speakers are marked,, usually 4 ohms or 8, though sometimes 16 ohms - use a multimeter to ensure you have something very close to these values according to the label on the speaker box & measure from the wires at the point where they connect to the amp

power the unit without any speakers or speaker wires connected,, if the transistors still get hot, you're very likely looking at bad transistors

What is probable cause of red screen display


Check the video output circuits on the base card of the TV. Check for any loose soldering on that board. Resolder all the suspected solder terminals by applying a little more soder. Check the video output transistor for [Red]. If it is found faulty, replace it. check the resistor connected to the collector terminal of this transistor for open circuit.

Toshiba 37av635DB,no display.fuse check:ok,lead: ok there was lightning and thunder.could possibly cut off one of the transistor. what could really happen?


very possible. look for punched through transistors, open 0 ohm resistors (they use them as fuses), open surface mount fuses (the flat green ones), other surface mount fuses (small rectangular white box looking things) and bulging/leaking electrolytic capacitors.
Remember that if you find what appears to be a shorted transistor, to remove it from the circuit and re-test it. Sometimes a transistor will be across a coil, and therefore read shorted.
look at any 120lead postage stamp sized ICs to see if they cracked their tops.

Chances are you'll find a fuse and a transistor and maybe a couple caps that need replacing.

TIP: when checking transistors, To remove them from the circuit I find it's easiest to simply clip 2 of the 3 leads, test, and solder the lead back together if it's ok. If it's bad, I clip the third lead, and then desolder each leg individually...much less effort and time that way!

It seems there's another component (a capacitor, a diode, etc) causing a short circuit to triac and transistor, or there's an over voltage on this stage, please check if the voltage is according to the one feeding the good channel.

It is likely one of the amps have blown as well as the power supply. The pwoer supply wipes out about $30 of components when it goes. If the fuse had been replaced after initial failure this results in more damage. For the power supply, typically the two IGBT's are wiped out and the four transistors driving them as well as the regulator chip and one or more of the gate speedup diodes which are surface mounted. Sometimes the surge limit resistors which are ceramic pacakged are blown. The hardest part is removing the heatsinks with the IGBT's on them. You DO need a desoldering station to work on this.
Usually you will find damage to the rearmost amp in the amplifier module. An arc beween layers of the multilayer circuit board causes inital failure. Three MOSFET transistors are blown and a Zener plus the board is charred and this cancer has to be ground away and re-insulated and circuit traces replaced by jumpers. Sometime the .03 ohm metering resistor on the bottom is fried... when that happens, two small surface mounted transistors are blown as well. All in all $50 of components are damaged typically.

Loud crack when turning unit on, blows main fuse no lights come on.. bottom of power supply black and signs of burn...


DO NOT REPLACE THE FUSE !!! You will do more damage.

I just repaired one of these. A small ceramic surface mounted cap very near where the +/- 85 volt connectors plug onto the board blew up.

This left a sputtered mess on the insulating material at the right rear corner of the power supply.

The net parts list of parts I had to replace:

1. Main IGBT transistors on heat sinks. You have to remove the heat sinks to get at the mounting screws. 1MBK50D or equivalent. I used DigKey part APT28GA60BD15

2. One 1N4148 surface mount diode that is for gate drive speedup. D24 and D25. (don't remember which one was shorted)

3. All four driver transistors for the gate of the IGBT's. @ each 2SA1020 (PNP) and 2SC2655 (NPN). These are tall TO92-like transistors and I believe that at least one of these I had to get from Mouser.

4. Transistor T9, suface mount BC856B (PNP)

5. Replaced all four surface mount caps, one had exploded.
C50, C51,C54,C56. Replace with 0.01mfd/200 Volt 1206 style surface mount caps Digikey 478-1511-6

6.Replaced ceramic wire wound 10 Watt stand up resistors that were blown open. Replaced with 20 ohm design change. These slowly charge the main input filter caps and when supply is stable, a relay shorts them out. If you have replaced the fuse, you LIKELY blew them out. Original value was 10 ohms on some units. This was a Mouser part. 280-PRM10-20-RC

7. The 2153 switching reg chip IC1. This chip shorts. It is made by International Rectifier and I believe the full number is something like IRF2153. I had these in stock and not sure of which source I had procured them from... It was from one or the other.

Lots of destruction and one really needs a desoldering station to work this. Removal of the blown IGBT's is especially tough. All solder must be removed from the transistor leads AND the thermistor on one of the heat sinks. Once you have verified the leads are loose, one has to rock the heat sinks to get the tabs free. The tabs are NOT soldered! Be careful when restoring to get the thermistor leads started in their holes.

Note: ALL these repair parts were procured from DigiKey.com and Mouser.com. Neither of these places had all, I had to order from both. Mouser had the ceramic resistors.

When restarting this, leave outputs disconnected until it is running again. USE a series 75 watt light bulb in the 120 volt input. ONLY work on the unit using an isolation transformer as a large portion of this is connected right to the power line.

There is a small 15 volt switching supply that comes on first that runs the relay to short out the inrush limiting resistors. With the 2153 shorted as usual, this auxilary supply can't reach voltage enough to turn on the relay. The power for this is supplied through the ceramic resistors.

I have a PMP5000 that I had to resurect. I had to trace out the power supply to repair it.

I can give you hint: First, a small supply runs directely from the line and generates some of the small voltages. While this starts, the main power caps are charged through limiting resistors. The main switcher is brought online and if the power amps acheive balance, then a relay connects the speakers and shorts the limiting resistors.

This is what is in the 5000 and I suspect the 3000 is similar.

In my 5000, there was arcing at one side of the power amps. The board was burned and three power fets fried. Cancer of burned board had to be carved out and traces replaced by hardwiring.
In addition, the limiting resistors were blown open, both main switching transistors were blown and 4 small driver transistors (surface mounted) and several diodes AND a switching regulator chip (surface mounted).all fried/

Hint: When restarting the unit, put a 150 watt light in series with one of side of the power input to limit the current in case you did not get all the dead bodies out.

This is a class "D" amp which drives PCM waves into a filter which is then the audio output. It is much more efficient thaan a linear amp.

When replacing output transistors on amplifiers it is generally a good practice to replace the output capacitors as well as the biasing resistors. Just because one transistor is bad does not mean that that is the whole problem. Look for what caused the problem. Bad speakers,bad wires,defective traces on circuit board,poor soldering. Also when mounting the transistor make sure it is insulated and grease it with a dab of silicone heat sink compound. Whenever I service a board I examine all components for tolerance as well. A resistor marked at 1% tolerance,example 1k ohm + or - 1% should read no less than 990 ohms and no more than 1010 ohms. Anything else your asking for trouble. Another point is that some amplifiers use matching pairs. Pairs complement each other in an output stage and must be replaced in pairs. I repaired a Sansui Amplifier a while back and it looked as if a power output resistor was burned. Comparing the two channels I figured the matching value from the other side and replaced all of them and the system has worked flawlessly for years now. I am a retired electrical engineer and have worked in a few areas of electronics for over 35 years. Hope this information helps you.

Power on but no led display


"Power board:
The power supply is the main culprit for most of the TA-E9000ES failures. Symptoms of this are no sound and a very dim or no display. Apparently the power board has several weaknesses which have caused Sony to supply a modified version in later production units. The circuit around transistors Q108 and Q109 are prone to oscillation, which will cause one or both transistors to break down, as well as resistor R124. This resistor is originally a surface mounted device capable of 1/10 watts of heat dissipation. The modification suggested by Sony is to replace this 4.7 k ohm resistor with a 1 watt rated version. Also, to prevent further oscillations a 100 pF capacitor is added in parallell with R153. (Some suggests that also transistor Q110 is a candidate for replacement.) The US issued service bulletin from Sony suggest that this fault may occur with units having a serial number in the range 800001 - 802746.
Serial numbers 80#### are for the US/Canadian version.
Serial numbers 50#### are for the european version."
