The top does not come off you must remove the cabinet. After flipping up the controls you remove the lid switch disconnect (pictured) and pop those brass S clips on either side of the case in the photo. Then tip the case forward and remove it.

How do I replace the lid switch on my Kenmore Series 80 washing machine I have the part

Hi

To replace the lid switch in a Whirlpool-built direct drive washer you’ll need to open it up. This washer use plastic end caps to cover the console screws. Just remove the console end caps and the console retaining screws are right there. Once you've removed the console screws, flip the entire control console up and back to reveal the cabinet retaining braces. After the cabinet is pulled back from washer you’ll be able to see the lid switch. You can inspect whether the lid switch is disconnected or burnt, use a multimeter to check the continuity of the lid switch.

Please post back for any further assistance.

How do you remove the washer door

Thanks very much, but my husband found a way to remove the lid on the washing machine. There are 3 screws on each side of the lid that have to be unscrewed in order to remove the lid.

How do I remove the cabinet on a direct drive washer. I have a bad lid switch.

The following link explains step-by-step how to replace a lid switch:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

You will need to remove the washer casing from the frame for better access to the switch. Once you disconnect the lid switch connector plug from the timer, push in on the release tabs of the white connector plug located on the washer casing and push it down through the hole it is installed in. Now reach under the washer top and remove the switch from the washer casing. Disconnect the ground wire and remove the screw(s) that hold the switch in place.

If you have the type of lid switch that is mounted near one of the lid hinges, this type unplugs and the mounting screw is removed, along with any ground wire.

If you have questions, or need additional assistance, please post back with your complete model number (located on a nameplate around the wash tub opening) let me know. I hope this helps you.

Washing machine will not drain or spin.

HELLO: YES THE LID SWITCH IS BAD. TO REPLACE THE LID SWITCH YOU MUST REMOVE THE COVER ON THE MACHINE. FIRST REMOVE THE TWO PHILLIPS SCREWS FROM THE CONTROL CENTER ON TOP BACK OF MACHINE . TILT BACK THE TIMER AND CONTROL CENTER GENTLY. THERE ARE TWO FUNNY LOOKING LID RETAINER SPRINGS THAT HOLD THE ENTIRE THREE SIDES OF THE MACHINE TOGETHER REMOVE THESE WITH A FLAT BLADE SCREW DRIVER. REMOVE THE POWER PLUG FROM THE WASHER UNDER TOP. SLIDE COVER OFF MACHINE THEN REMOVE THE TWO PHILLLIPS SCREWS FROM THE LID SWITCH ASSY. UNPLUG SWITCH FROM COVER AND REPLACE WITH NEW UNIT . THERE IS ALSO ONE GROUND SCREW 5/16 THAT WILL COME OFF FROM UNDER NEATH THE COVER. THIS SOUNDS A LITTLE COMPLICATED BUT THE WHOLE PROCEDURE CAN BE DONE IN LESS THAN 10 MINUTES. Kenmore washer model 110.24642300 fills with water and then does nothing. Tried other modes such as spin, but it stills does nothing.

I had the same problem.
The sensor which determines whether or not the lid is down may be going bad.
To tell - turn the washing machine on and let it fill with water. At this point, the washing machine stops. So raise the lid and place a screwdriver into the hole around the collar of the washing machine. This is the same hole that the lid, when closed, presses into, activating the sensor to notify the machine that the lid is closed so it can begin washing.

WILL NOT SPIN

Lady Victoria, you are going to have to remove the cabinet to get to the lid switch. Remove the two screws from the back of the top consol and flip it up. Unplug the lid switch and remove the snap springs. The cabinet will now lift off and you can get at the lid switch. I will attach some helpful pics...Catriver..post back
