Question about Computers & Internet
When the laptop is switched off, the charger will charge the machine, but when i turn it on, the power supply LED flashes every few seconds, and does not register the fact that it is plugged into the power socket. the 'plugged in to poer' icon does not show up ,only the 'X% battery remaining' one does.
Check that the power supply is the correct one for the laptop. It sounds as if the supply doesn't have enough power to supply the laptop (Watts)

SOURCE: Sony Viao, won't power up
Laptop motherboard power pin, broken solder connections. Quite common on all laptops. Can be bought from ebay for cheap, if you are mechanically inclined and can solder you should be able to repair it yourself, if not need to find someone who is good at electonics and have them repair it for you.

turn it off, pull the battery from the bottom, and try it again... chances are, the power adapter is not rated properly for the notebook, or the battery is dead and won't hold a charge anymore, in which case, recycle the battery.

You could well be wright but concidering what you have said about the battery I would try a few things first.
Clean the battery contacts both on the battery and laptop first with Braso or Autosol and then with metholated spirits. Check that the contacts on the laptop side aren't twisted or depresed. Go into a shop and ask wether you can just try a replacement battery instore with the intention to purchase if it works.
Lithium Ion batteries whilst superior to most other rechargeables in power to weight are inferior in life span. If you get 2 years out a Li-ion your doing well, every day after that is a blessing from God. In most laptops the battery acts as a sink/capacitor/regulator ie battery failure = no function.
Hope I'm rite.

I have seen this with faulty batteries.
Try changing the battery.
Also, check in the BIOS that the adapter you are using is recognised and shows a state of charging with the battery in.
