Question about Hunter CareFree Plus 33222 Humidifier

1 Answer

Not adding moisture to the air

The humidifier started dripping water instead of working properly after the last cleaning. I have had this for a year and know how to clean and assemble it. It is as if the evaporator is not working. The water just runs down the insides and back into the water cup and is not evaporated.

Have you cleaned the unit lately? The following is from the owners manual.
1. Turn the humidifier ‘OFF’ and unplug the unit.
2. Lift the main housing and remove the water dispersion tray and the PermaWick™ Filters. The motor is attached to the main housing. Do not place the motor near water. Do not use a wet towel on the motor or motor housing as electrical shock may occur.
3. The PermaWick™ Filter should be cleaned in a vinegar and water solution to remove any mineral buildup. Place in a solution of one (1) gallon of water and eight (8) ounces of undiluted white vinegar. Allow the filter to soak for 20 minutes.
4. After soaking, rinse it several times with clean water. Place the PermaWick™ Filter in a location where it can drip dry while you clean the other parts of your humidifier.
5. Remove the water tank from the base and empty any water that is left in the tank. Soak the base in a mixture of one (1) gallon of water and eight (8) ounces of vinegar for 20 minutes.
6. After soaking, wipe the base with a soft cloth or sponge to remove any mineral build up. Rinse with clean water several times. If you are planning on storing the humidifier, be sure the base is completely dry.
7. Fill the water tank with one (1) gallon of water and eight ounces of undiluted white vinegar. Replace the tank cap and shake the tank vigorously until all interior surfaces of the tank have been exposed to the water/vinegar mixture.
8. Empty the tank of the water/vinegar mixture. Rinse it several times with clean water and then replace the tank cap. If you are planning on storing the humidifier, dry it inside and out, leaving the cap off to allow the tank to completely dry. Continue to clean the other parts of your humidifier.
9. Remove the water diffuser cap by squeezing the two tabs as shown in Figure 3. Rinse the cap in clean water to remove any debris. If the cap contains hard water residue, soak it in a mixture of one (1) quart of water and two (2) ounces of vinegar for 20 minutes. 41553-01 01/03/2008 6 © 2008 Hunter Fan Company
Rinse well and reinstall the water diffuser cap. Do not expose motor or other electrical components to water.
10. Wipe the surfaces of the main housing with a soft cloth.
11. Once all the parts are clean, reassemble the humidifier, and follow the USING YOURHUMIDIFIERto continue use. If you are storing the humidifier, make sure the parts are completely dry, reassemble, and store in a dry location

Scale build up on heating element

Try white vinegar instead. The same type of scale builds up in drip coffee makers. Most recommend white vinegar to remove the scale that builds up over time. The added bonus is it costs less and is completely safe. If your unit is a water over paper media humidifier, you would be much easier to replace the paper media.

My desert springs humidifier doesn't work. I suspect that it's about 6 or 7 years old. The furnace is still running and I've tried all solutions that seem obvious to me. Is it possible that the motor has...

Well, let's see what service the unit has had in its 6 or 7 years of working--

When was the Humidifying pad last changed?
These usually have to be changed every year-- to get good performance from the humidifier...
So-- Have you looked inside the large door?-- what does the pad look like?

When the furnace is running, you should be able to open the humidifier door, and look in, (Air should be sucking INTO the door as you open it, if the unit is properly mounted in the return air duct work..) and if the humidistat is calling -- the motor should be turning the big wheel, and moisture is being added, as the wet surface is exposed to the air returning to the furnace. What do you see?

There is also a water sump, filled by a float valve-- is that valve admitting water into the sump?
Is the pad wicking up this water, and rotating into the air stream?

That pad is easily changed-- your hard ware store probably has replacement pads-- they can be sewn back on to the wheel, after removing the old one.

Let us know if we can help further-

I just moved iinto my new home. I have never owned a home with aprilair 560 unit. I just got it fixed I hope. But I put a new water filter in monday the 27th. How often should you replace it. ...

It is a bypass humidifer the pad in it should last a couple of years, the water runs over the pad and air pulls moisture off the pad. Putting it into the home. Make sure the damper is open for proper air flow.

I only used my machine for just about two weeks (only in the evenings)with a brand new filter and already the top of the filter has turned yellow/brown and brittle. Is it normal to go through a filter so...

how long the filter will last depends on your water .. if your water has a high mineral content then that is left behind as the water evaporates from the filter/wick ... the yellow brown sounds like calcium deposits .. calcium is often added to water to give it a good taste .. that may be beneficial for you but will build up on the filter .. it doesn't hurt much until it starts to clog the voids in the filter material .. as long as air gets thru then the deposits will be ok .. normally the filter should last about 3 months .. if you use distilled water (with no calcium added) then much longer .. if you have hard water then less .. there is a tablet that you can add to the water to reduce the calcium buildup .. the manufacturer of your humidifier will likely recommend that .. thats often available from hardware stores also ..

so your choices are:
1. don't worry about it until the filter becomes clogged
2. use the anti calcium tablet or something like ProTec PC-1 Humidifier Tank Cleaning Cartridge
3. use distilled water for really long filter life
4. plan on replacing the filter every 3 months

other types of humidifiers have other problems .. the hot water type gets calcium deposits on the heating element requiring cleaning a couple times a year, usually with vinegar or a calcium solvent .. that takes awhile..

the Ultrasonic type doesn't generally have problems with internal deposits because it blows moist air out including the calcium .. that produces a fine dust on surfaces in your house ..

of those types the filter system like yours is easier to maintain than the hot water type and doesn't leave dust behind like the ultrasonic all work better and longer if the water is pure .. distilled water doesn't cost much but you have to be careful .. read the small print .. some of it will say "calcium added" .. you don't want that .. if you use only distilled water then the filter should last the whole year ..

Honeywell HE260 leaks somewhere

Neither, even if the solenoid or humidistat stick, it should always drain properly. Is the unit mounted on the cold air return duct or the supply plenum? If it's mounted on the supply plenum, the water panel might be getting blown forward and spilling the water. High efficient furnaces also can leak water on the floor if its drain is restricted. If hum. is mounted on return duct make sure drain is clear by blowing through it. On Honeywell hum's I've seen the rubber hose from the solenoid valve to the distributor tray leak too, check the rubber 1/4" hose.

I added water and the vicks medicine and no steam

medication was never meant to go into a humidifier. it clogs the transducer. if you can clean the vicks off the transducer plate you might squeeze another season out of it, otherwise by adding medication to the machine you just gave it an early death.

Vicks caporiser is spitting water instead of steam

Clean the unti - and do not add salt. I live in a major hard water city...and was amazed at how much dirt the tank collected. I tried adding salt to to stop the spitting, which did make a lot more steam, but did NOT stop teh water spit. I also noticed, with salt added, water in tank would only last 4-6 hours, not the 18-24 hours it should. I just figured it out, and now mine works great again, and does not spit. I cleaned the water tank throughly, several rinses, then wiped out entire inside. If you want it to work like new, you have to keep your tank as clean as new. I am going to start filtering my water that I put in with a double pantyhose I made simply so there no more dirt ~ a clean tank will fix the problem, it did mine :)

Filters can get dirty pretty quick with the use of tap water. I attached the manual for you so that you can clean it.
Personally, i replace my humidifier filter at least once every 2 months.

Good Luck.

Fan is running but humidity is not changing

Q: My unit has been running for several hours. I hear the fan spinning, but I do not notice the water level in the tank decreasing.
A:
First, check the filter to ensure it is wet. If the pad appears dry, remove it from the Base and gently rinse under cool water. Reposition wet filter in the Base. You may also want to note the current moisture level in your home. If the humidity level is over 60% the unit will not put out much moisture
as your air is already saturated.

OK?
Comment by Soulvisitor, posted on Jan 20, 2008 Q: I hear the fan turning, but I don’t see any mist. Is my humidifier operating properly?
A:
Dry air is pulled through the system and a fan disperses invisible, moisture balanced air. There is no
“mist” emitted. When operating normally you will feel only cool air coming from the unit. Monitor the
water level in your Tank/ Base. If you notice a decrease in the Water Tank over 24 hours then the unit
is operating normally.
