SOURCE: need a basic diagram to wire a ceiling fan.

Depending on how your place is wired will dictate the solution here.

The light box in your ceiling should have two or three wires. Black and White, or Red, Black and White.

If you have two wires (one switch to control everything):
Black is power - hook this to the fan's power wire (and the fan's light wire if applicable)
White is neutral - hook this to the fan's neutral wire.

If you have three wires (two separate switches):
Red is power for the light - hook this to the fan's light wire if applicable
Black is for the fan - hook this to the fan's motor
White is neutral - hook this to the fan's neutral wire.

SOURCE: Trying to replace 3 speed ceiling fan switch

Hello,

The black goes to the L connection the others are a guess. You can do this two ways. Connect the colored wires in any sequence and then see what switch sequence give you high and lowest, the other one will be medium. Once you determine that, mark the wires with a piece of masking tape as high, medium and low. Otherwise you connect them, turn power on and use a multimeter to see which color gives you the highest voltage and which gives you lowest. Since you aren't comfortable using live wires and a meter, go with the first option and use the process of elimination to find the wires giving you the speeds you need to find the highest and lowest. Next, you need to determine how your switch sequence works. First pull has to give you highest speed. so you may end up wiring them in reverse if your first attempt is backwards. There is a reason the first pull needs to be highest, it powers up the motor so you can then chose a lower setting. A low setting first will over tax your motor and wear it out eventually as it has to work harder at first.

Let me know if you need further clarification and perhaps this is all you need to get fixed.

Worldvet
ps I checked on the Internet of a wiring diagram and I bet you did tok all to no avail.

I did not make a diagram when replacing the light switch

Red from switch goes to two blacks, blue from switch goes to two blacks and the black wire goes thru top of light and attaches to blue fan light wire. If you want a good fan, look for blade pitch(13 degree or higher)Or CFM's above 5500 on high.

Fan switch are LJY-280A and E198635

I have a Hampton Bay indoor/outdoor ceiling fan with 3 speed fan switch WU Pin LJY280A, E198635. It is a L-3-1-2 (ccw) switch with purple, grey, black and brown wires. The wiring is different than most on web. The L is not black, 2 is black. My wiring for the switch is L-Purple, 3-Grey, 1-Brown, 2-Black.
Found schematic on web that I think is correct:
Off-none,
Hi-L,1 4uF,
Med.-L,2,3 10uF & 4uF,
Low-L,3 5uF & 4uF.
I hope this helps someone.

I understand that the black and blue wire can be connected to the black wire in my ceiling. ok fair enough. However, in my new bedroom, there is 2 switches on the wall that apparently control two black...

A ceiling fan requires a neutral wire (white), a ground wire (green), a hot wire for the fan (black), and on fans with light kits a hot wire for the lights (blue). These examples will assume that a lighting kit is going to be used, but if it is not terminations to the blue wire are not required and the circuit is greatly simplified The ceiling fan and light can also be wired through switches. When a single switch is used to connect to the ceiling fan and light the ceiling fan (black) and light (blue) would both be connected to the switched black wire. In this configuration turning the switch on would power both the light and ceiling fan. In order to turn just one off, the pull strings would have to be used. The problem with this approach, is that when the pull strings have been used to turn the light or ceiling fan off, turning the switch back on will not work until the pull string is pulled again .
The ceiling fan and light can also be wired through two switches. This would generally be two separate switches, one for the fan and one for the light. This would generally be a 3 conductor w/ground coming from the switch box. The ceiling fan (black) wire would connect to the switched black wire from the ceiling fan switch, the light wire (blue) would connect to the switched red wire from the light switch and the neutral (white) and ground (bare) would connect to the their associated wires..
