SOURCE: Code UU

Here is the code explained direct from Kohler's manual. I'd disconnect the generator load first.
UU Undervoltage Shutdown occurs if the voltage falls below 80% of the nominal system voltage for more than seconds. Check wiring and connections.
Reduce the load and restart the generator set. —
Check wiring and Check controller configuration, system voltage
and frequency (parameter UU).

Check AC voltage and adjust, if necessary. 5.7
Replace the SCR module and test voltage again. 4.9
Separately excite unit. 5.2
Check stator continuity

SOURCE: I have Kohler 12Res generator,sometimes

If it has a couple hundred hours or more, try cleaning the slips rings on the back of the rotor shaft. They should be very shiny and not black or polished looking.

Gen runs when switch in auto even though power avail. Tried resetting ATS - waited 30 min. No luck. Only way to turn off is to move switch to stop/reset. Any ideas on what is broken?

have an electrician check the relay that is activated when the utility power fails
that is what starts the genset when it is in auto
it should also stop the get set when utility power comes back on

My coleman powermate 1850 will run for about 15 to 30 min, then it shuts down. Then I have to wait 1 to 2 hours to start again. could it be the low oil switch has gone bad? or is it a plugged exhaust

Could be a bad magneto coil, check for spark right after it shuts down. If no spark you need a new coil, If you have a bad coil it will heat up and will not generate a spark but after it cools down it will work until it gets hot.

I have a fault code of 37 on my onan 5500 genset.. Whats this mean?

Usually what that means is that the genset Configuration is not set correctly you will need to bring it to a factory authorized service center for them to correct this.

My 3.5 kw kohler marine gen starts and shuts right off throwing code uu (under voltage) last season it did this and sometimes showed loc (loss of coolant) but never appeared low or showed sign of coolant...

Check that when you run it, it is not in fact making correct voltage (within about 10% is good), also make sure the engine is coming up to full speed, 3600 or 1800. You could check this with a multimeter that measure hertz. On the main output leads when the genset is running make sure it is getting close to 60 hz. or if you are in an area that uses 50 hz. check for that respectively. There are a couple things that would affect this, one would be your SCR module. There is a test procedure for this which you could find here. http://www.scribd.com/doc/50171916/tp6196-1 . I don't work on marine units, mostly standby so these manuals are for residential. Check your fuses, could even go as far as checking the wiring in the back and wiring and condition of the brushes and sliprings. These actually build field voltage to make 240 or 120 volts whatever your unit is configured to make. The brushes need to sit flat on the slip rings and on a unit with 10 hrs. the sliprings I can't imagine would be very dirty but check that as well. If you have an ADC2100 controller use this manual to go into the controller to verify that it is set for the correct voltage that the machine is built to make. The only other fairly simple thing to check that I've had issues with is if Kohler mounted a fuse block on the side of the cabinet mounted to the genset with no vibration isolation. Check these fuses while attempting to run the unit and make sure you getting steady voltage out of them as sometimes they will vibrate causing pulsed voltage to come out of them and can give you an intermittent UU, UF, or OC fault (undervoltage, underfrequency, overcrank).

My gen starts and runs for 1 min or so then dies restarts then dies again and again. if i start it under load ( turn on air con) it will run for 10 min then die allen

Is there a fault?? All UL listed generators including Kohler are required to lockout on a fault on shut down. This really sounds like a problem with your 2-wire auto start connection between your automatic transfer switch and genset. RDT model automatic transfer switch it is the 2 middle wires on the green connector and terminals 3&4 in the generator. close to run and open to shut down. Any open at any time will cause the unit to shut down. The 12 will shut down instantly upon an open because your 5 minute cool down is built into the transfer switch.

Hi . i have a 2001 VW golf 1.4 16 valve AXP engine code . the problem is the car will start and run for about 30 minutes or so and then for no apparrent reason just cut out . EPC warning light comes on ....

change the pedal sensors if fitted ,not sure it has them though i cannot remember everything ,nothing in my alldata book about a fault with this particular model .but this is a common sort of problem with vehicles with pedal sensors

I have a dewalt generator that will crank and run fine for about 5 mins before it cuts off.

I am going to guess that this is an air cooled engine. When a genset shutsdown after 5 minutes it could be that the the oil pressure switch is not operating properly, or that output voltage is dropping out. Also, check the speed of the genset using a frequency meter at the outlets. It shouldn't be no more than 62Hz.

I hv a colemanpowermate 5000/6250w generator- won't stay running

Hi, Please understand that this type of troubleshooting is hard without seeing it but doesn't sound like a fuel issue at all. This genset does have other sensors that will shut it down like low oil and high temperature. Most likely oil from your description. You also don't say what load it is carrying, could you be plugged into something that cycles off and on and when it cycles on the genset shuts down from the overload? If you think this might be the case, disconnect everything and power up a few at a time especially things that cycle on and off like refrigerators, heaters, stoves. Good Luck!

Generator is stalling

My answer:

Not knowing your model # and how old your generator really is - as related to TOTAL RUN HOURS - I can only give you several possibilities of what the problem might be even though I don't know the make & model and what the rated WATTAGE output is.

I also don't know what LOAD you are putting on the Genset or at what RPM you are running the engine at as to half throttle or full throttle setting?? I take it that it's a Briggs & Stratton 4-stroke single cyl, or is it a Honda 4-stroke single/twin cyl engine?

Since it runs good for 30 mins, and then starts to cut out - I doubt that the OIL is a problem even though you ran straight 30 weight - seeings most small engines run 10-30 weight oil as a rule.

I seriously doubt you did any damage to the engine at all unless it was ran low on oil - in which case it should have a LOW OIL cutoff switch mounted in the lower engine case close to the CHECK OIL port.

If the LOW OIL switch is working properly and adjusted properly then you shouldn't be getting cutout unless this switch is mis-adjusted. (ie: mechanically set too low as then when the oil level is indeed at it's proper level the switch would be already shorting out to ground) (See your operators manual for proper setting)

A way to check for proper operation is to temporarily disconnect the (usually) BLACK wire from the LOW OIL switch when the engine starts to cut out. If the problem goes away completely then the LOW OIL switch is either mis-adjusted or else it is going bad from vibration. (Again see your operators manual for proper adjustment and/or check out procedure)

Electronically this LOW OIL switch should be the only thing that would protect the engine from damage should the oil level fall below recommended level. Other then that it may have an electronic REV LIMITER if it's a bigger and more expensive model, but usually not.

I doubt the Maintenance-free Magnetron® electronic ignition is at fault, but could be weak and going bad. Always a possibility, but I would 1st rule out everything else first. Since the Genset runs for 30 mins and then starts to cut out I would look more for like a fuel vapor lock (partially closed or clogged gas cap vent), a possible dirty fuel filter, possible water moisture in the gas tank or in the carb bowl, possibly dirty carb in general along with it's dirty Float Bowl, Float Pin, Float and Needle Valve, and any Adjustment Screws that go Into the Carb Body. That covers everything from a fuel standpoint.

You do know that all Gensets should be started and run for at least 10 mins every 30 days - right? If you didn't know this - now you do! Every good operators manual should state this.

It just doesn't sound like it's starving for gas unless it's building up a (vacuum) or vapor lock in the gas tank.

Having covered everything from an Electronics/electrical standpoint engine wise - there is only one other thing left Genset wise.

What it really sounds like to me (and I personally HAVE SEEN this happen myself firsthand) is that the generator brushes are nearly shot - as in almost worn out. They may be getting too too hot - as from excessive current draw at point of contact, and thus the generator sensing circuitry itself is doing an electrical CUTOUT!!

An added protective Genset circuit feature in that the generator itself may indeed be linked to the engine as a type of REV LIMITER on the Maintenance-free Magnetron® electronic ignition. Again - your operators or service manual should have a pretty good troubleshooting section in it unless you don't have that anymore or never got one if you bought it used to begin with.

It has to be one of the scenarios listed above.

Please post me a reply as to the found problem there, and the resolve to it by following my recommendations above. Also please rate my troubleshooting fix as well.

Best regards and thanks,

Frank
