The tv works fine except the heads are cut off on all channels. works as it should with a dvd. i dont have the remote or the manual.

It sounds like you may have the zoom mode enabled on the TV source. A lot of HDTVs have settings for how different modes like 4:3 format source video is displayed such as Normal, Full, Wide, Zoom and Wide Zoom. Each signal input may have a different display mode and that is why DVDs look ok and TV does not. Not all TVs have that feature but most of the ones that I have dealt with do.
It may also be a screen centre adjustment in the cable box or satellite receiver.
