i don't think there's anything wrong there...all laptop fans switch themselves on and off depending on the situation. the fans are normally off but when the temperature rises they turn on to cool off the laptops.

I plugged it up to my PC over night to charge and it wont charge

I would check to make sure that the power cord is plugged into the wall and is making good connection. Use a lamp to test the outlet and make sure it is working. If you eliminate the outlet as a cause of problem, check to make sure that the other end of the cord is plugged solidly into the transformer (the plastic "brick"). If it is, check to see if the transformer gets really hot over time. If it does, it is a problem with the transformer and you should replace it. Check the connection where the power cord plugs into the laptop. It should be plugged in all the way and shouldn't be loose. If you are getting good power to your computer (normally there is an indicator light on the laptop somewhere that tells you when its plugged in), and it just will not hold a charge, It may be time for a new battery. You can contact your computer's manufacturer for replacement batteries and chargers.

I just purchased Malibu ML 600 TW transformer, and ran wire and attached lights, but I can't get any of them to work. Perhaps I'm wiring it incorrectly? How do I test the transformer to see if it is...

Malibu website
Malibu manuals

The power pack has a humming sound >> put your ear close
Plug in a hair dryer on same plug to see if you have power
Check the GFI tripper in bathroom and kitchen
Plug power pack directly into receptacle (no extension cord)
It is hard to believe you got every light wrong >> the light connections are pretty fail-proof today

1) You can test the transformer by rotating manual override counterclockwise >> that's the on-off switch
2) You can test transformer by seeing if clock dial rotates with passing time > the clock must rotate
3) You can check if wires have power > disconnect wires > use another wire to scratch across both terminals to see if there is a spark

4) Did you put the red-and-black tripper pins on the dial? Red = ON Black = OFF

5) I think you forgot to set the time of day correctly
- put in tripper pins.
- rotate center dial clockwise to present time
- now, rotate dial two more full rotations and come back to present time

If the dial will not rotate or transformer does not have power, then the transformer is defective.

My dog chewed the cord in half! ?? dog is ok

Yea yea yea ... blame it on the poor dog ...

Is this printer a 110 VAC into the device or is it powered by a transformer?

If by a standard cord, use any computer cord. If by a transformer, there is that possibililty you can repair the broken wire by removing the damaged portion and reconnecting the two ends. Pay attention to the marks on the wire (white mark or ridge or color of the conductor). Make sure the two wires are insulated from each other.

If you are not able to effect this repair yourself, or by a neighbor with a such skills, get yourself to the computer repair shop around the corner from where you live and plea your case. Expect to pay $15.00 for this repair job. If you require a new power supply, please check www.hp.com/support for your model, e-bay or Craigs List.

There are a few emergency ideas for you. If it is really really really critical and you can't find or make the repair ... you can always get a new, economy printer to use until you can get this one going again.

I use CCleaner that removes all un-necessary data from your computer.

Here is the link to download it www.ccleaner.com if you select the 'alternative download' you will get the free version which is what I use.

This software has kept my computer running fast for a number of years now. Highly recommend it!

Anybody got the driver link to download for an advent laptop as my function keys dont show on screen but work fine

The Advent support site is rubbish. All drivers/utils they list are easily available else where. The ones that can't be found elsewhere aren't given. Useful. However...

For OLDER Advent Laptops/Notebooks and most Advent PCs are made by 'Medion' a German firm. Their website supplies ALL drivers, utils etc for your laptop by the Medion (MD) model number. This you will find on the back of your laptop and will usually begin with a MD- reference (ignore the Advent model number ****).

Stick this model number, or your serial number if you're using a PC, in here: http://www1.medion.de/downloads/?lang=uk and it will list all the applicable drivers for your notebook.

For NEWER Advent Laptops/Notebooks a Tawainese company called ECS manufacturer the Notebooks. You will find the 'ECS' number on the back of your laptop, similar to ECS-G610 for example (thats the model number for the Advent 7091). This can then be used to search for relevent drivers/BIOS' etc here:

http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Downloads/Category_Download.aspx?Categoryid=3&MenuID=37&LanID=9

For MUCH OLDER Advent Laptops/Notebooks a company named as Gericom manufactured the notebooks (also known as Gericon in Germany it seems) and also sold under the name's of 'Mecer', 'Acer' and 'Uniwill', among others. These have model numbers similar to N340S8 etc.

Tracking drivers for these is pretty hard, but these guys seem to still have them on an old section of their site:

http://ftp.mustek.co.za/drivers/list.php?dir=Repository%2F
and by product name (which wasn't used by Advent)
http://www.acomp.hu/pub/gericom/Notebook/
also from the actual source (Gericom) but by product name again

It seems it's one of those "vintage" sets. I don't imagine that the problem is very major since such (older) sets are known to develop bad joints, especially around the larger components (funny, sounds just like a problem that humans have). It might not be necessary to replace the LOPT. Just resolder as many joints as you can see. Usually the ones reponsible for arcing will leave visible signs of burn. The acrid smell you detected was probably ozone (given off when high voltage ionizes oxygen in the air). Good luck, if you haven't already solved the problem.
