Question about Rheem 40 Gallon FVR NATGAS Water Heater 6 YR 22V40F1
Just moved in and gas hot water system is off, followed directions but pilot light not lighting. what are the taps beside the hot water service for, do they need to be turned? gas is on as gas furnace heater is working.

Most likely it's time to replace the thermocouple, the safety device that makes sure the pilot is lit. New thermocouples are cheap and you can find them at most hardware stores and the big-box places (Home Depot, etc.)

I would suggest that you remove pilot assembly from gas valve and burner and clean pilot orifice and see if that helps. Be careful when cleaning hole in the orifice so you don't enlarge the hole. Good luck and thank you.
