No real basic test for an amature other than to replace it or swap out with another one.
A Pro would use a Volt Meter and test each lead based on the scimantic on the PS. Need to test for both Negitive and Positive.
If you smell the PS and it smells like an electrical fire... it's probably bad forsure.
A local PC store... not Best Buy... charges about 30-40 dollars to buy the hardware. Switching it out is pretty logical.
You can order on-line with NewEgg.com if you can't find it local.
