Reverse quit working suddenly and shifts hard going forward (automatic)

Problem happened suddenly. ****** fluid is full, nice & red. No leaks. When problem first happened reverse went out without warning. Pushed car out of parking stall and drove it home (approx. 15 miles). Car would shift late and hard and then was somewhat 'jerky' for entire drive. Is ****** shot? Possibly a sensor, vaccum hose or something less than full ****** rebuild or replacement?

Are you talking about the torque convertor?

  • Jamie Alton
    Jamie Alton Nov 04, 2012

There is no such thing as a fluid flywheel.

  • Anonymous Nov 05, 2012

Jamie, a fluid flywheel IS a torque convertor. with an extra rotor.

  • Anonymous Nov 05, 2012

When the extra rotor fails that is when you lose the increased torque, you still get drive but with over heating and sluggish performance.

SOURCE: transmission problem

Sounds like linkage all right, especially if the shifter is limp. You got lucky. My old '83 Chevy Chevette got stuck in 1st gear this way. Usually an easy fix, just look for where the rods are supposed to connect, and a new cotter pin will usually take care of this problem.

SOURCE: transmission slipping,dies in drive

Hi there.Hope this can help.On the top of the transmission there's a black electrical plug that the shift linkage goes in..It sounds like the range sensor is out of adjustment..If you try going from reverse to like first or second does it still stall. You may have to get it adjusted.Does the selector in the car where it say P R N D 2 1 Line up with its indicator.

My 2005 Jetta is not shifting smoothly between the lower gears and makes a kind of clunking sound from 3rd-2nd. Drives very nice on freeway but it is very noticible when stopping and going frequently. ...

Standard or automatic? If auto have you checked your fluid. Is it full and what does it look like a bright red or a deep burnt red that smells burnt. Automatic transmissions use solenoids to control shifts for a while now. Occasionally they can get plugged or quit working due to small metal filings that come from where on transmission. When they gopen they will cause hard shifts.. p.'s. Is it cold where you are as vw transmissions really don't like the cold. They is many reports of cold weather causing hard shifts and also slow reacting to going into drive or reverse.

Car shifts hard (up & down), especially shifting to reverse.

that delayed reaction may be the transmission slipping. with those many miles it could be the transmission going bad

Shifting hard in reverse & delay shifting in drive

Hi

It sounds like the torque converter is packing up. best way to tell is to take the hand brake off put the car in drive when parked and lift your foot from the brake, if the car starts to creep forward by its self "no throttle" then its most likely the torque converter.

Its an expensive part and they always seem to go around the mileage you say the car has.

In the UK they are around £400 average price but may be cheaper in the US.

I would normally say check the fluid but as you say its been done then, no point.

other possibilities are the slave cylinder for the fluid not functioning correctly. thats about £50 in the UK.

And lastly the gearbox it's self. Its quite unlikely from what you have said but still get it checked out if you think thats the cause.

Hope this is helpful.

Shift fine in forward gears but now does not shift into reverse. The truck will not pull in reverse. it is a 4 wheel dirve with a automatic trans.

Will it move if you put the transfer case in low range? If so the there's a good chance the reverse clutch is going out. Did it go all at once or did you notice some slipage? If it went all at once it could be a hydraulic problem or broken internal parts. It takes more pressure to apply reverse than the forward gears so it could a valve body or pump problem. Is it full of fluid, is the fluid dirty (brown or black)? I think Ford recommends changing the fluid at 30,000-50,000 miles change the transfer case oil too.
