Question about DVD & Blu-Ray Players

Liteon HDD/DVD LVW5055GDL I have a lite on LVW5055GDL hard disk video recorder that is about 2 years old. It does not recognise any DVD blank discs. When I try to copy anything from Hard drive, it instructs me to change the disk or it opens the tray without any instructions. I have cleaned the lens many a times with cleaner discs bought from Comet " 2-Way DVD Lens Cleaner". It still does not solve my problem. I was looking for a replacement drive but can not find equivelant product. Anyone else had this problem? Can anyone help me to locate the drive or tell me how to overcome this problem. B Visrolia

HI
I've found that once a disk is formatted in certain formats with a pc it prevents the HDD from reading it.  Format it again in the HDD (if you can!) or use the pc to format it using the UDF1.5 setting in a pc (which sort of resets it so the HDD can at least see it as an unused disc again).

All in all I have found my RH19991H really confusing as far as disk initialization and formatting and finalizing is concerned.  Sometimes you can select to finalize a +-rw dvd and sometimes not (the latter is the the case according to the manual) and sometimes I can select the format mode and sometimes not.  Sometimes the machine auto finalizes the dvd+-rw (the way it should be says the manual) and sometimes it does not and then I cannot use it in the pc.  I have also created some disks with DivX files and was able to play them in the HDD and then using the same pc, same type of discs, same video editing software and same settings created other DivX files I could not play on the HDD.  It seems the software on the machine needs some work...

Hard to locate a replacement optical drive.

another way to get the data out of the HDD - connect the HDD to a computer (taking it out of the player and use a HDD enclosure).

Hi,

see if the player tries to read the disc. Load a disc and listen.
Does the player make squealing noises or is it totally quiet? Squealing noises may indicate that the player is trying to synchronize with the disc but can't due to an obstruction on the lens or in the laser path inside the pickup or a defect in the pickup. This can also be caused by an intermittent signal problem due to a faulty ribbon cable.

Totally silent means that the photo sensor is not getting any usable input from the laser at all, meaning that the pickup is "blind" for lack of a better word.
This can be caused by an obstruction of the beam by foreign matter on the lens or inside the pickup all the way to a marginal or failed laser diode and/or photosensor array. This can also be caused by a bad ribbon cable with one or more severed traces.

You could try to clean the optics. This is the most common malfunction as far as i know in all disc players. It would involve taking the cover off and finding a way to expose the lense, and then cleaning it with a very gentle brush. some players have a cover for the lense that swings to the side during playing, this greatly reduces the chance of dust accumulating, but its still worth the try.

If you actually see dust on the lense, then its just that simple. clean, close, play.

It may also be worth your while to check on the small shafting that guides the carriage of the laser pickup. Dirt, grome, dust and solidified lubricant can cause stoppage of the carriage and the laser eye then fails to read the next track. Please refer to the image i have attached.

Did you try to go online and upgrade the firmware? sometimes these things are corrected as time goes on they write new firmware for their equiptment. Go to their website and see if there is an updated firmware. If so install it. Other than that from personal experience, some dvd players simply dont like certain media, some like maxell and won't plat TDK or Sony. It is not unusual to see that happen, my sony dvdrw won't burn and cdrw's its more the norm than the exception, and I get better results wit -R than +R, so if you are able to pick up several types and brands, that may be the answer, it isn't a great answer but like i mentioned it's not unusual. First try the firmware upgrade look here,http://www.us.liteon.com/, good luck, and thanks for using FixYa

If it t does not recognise any DVD blank discs, then it is the lens, at list it is lens 9 to 1.

To fix the problem , the unit must be tken apart, and the lens cleaned using q tips and isopropyl alcohol.

If that does not work replace the lens pickup.

Also ensure that you tried different brands blank DVDs, and that you tried both +R and -R DVDs, even if many models are supposed to read both formats, you often get problems in recording either + or - R DVDs.

The Drive is the DVD reader unit, and can be replaced (this is more expensive, but fix the problem). This is one of the most common problems on this unit, and is usually related to lens.

If the unit recognise that there is no disk, it is always the lens, as belt is in place, motor working, unit is operating, and a logical fault of this kind is rather unlikely.

When a cleaner DVD is not enough, the lens must be accessed direcly and cleaned.

The repair must be done by a qualified technician.

LITE ON HD-A740GX ONLY HAVE DIGITAL SIGNAL HOW DO I TUNE IN CAN I TUNE IN

You must connect a digital TV box between your arial and your Liteon, so the arial cable goes into the digital box, and use a SCART cable from the digital box to the Liteon. Then record using the SCART input on the Liteon. Another SCART cable can be connected from the Liteon to your TV, so you can view what you have recorded.

Liteon 5045 problem in playing normal movie DVD's

The DVD drives are very unreliable and just get more temperamental with age. I replaced mine with a Lite-On SOHW-1213S. The DVD is too big to fit in the old ones place so it sits on top of the unit with the cable going through the slot, but it works brilliantly.

Try switching it over to DVD . Because you may still have it on HDD when you put the disc in it may be that the unit is still thinking you are on HDD and don't recognise it as a disc just the hard drive

Will not record onto blank DVD's from HDD on LVW-5045 HDD-DVD 160 gb

Hi Barry - I too have a Lite-on and was initially over the moon with it. For the last year or so I have been unable to "read" disks and was just using it for the hard drive for recording - but this weekend my father in law had the exact same problem occur to his Lite-on and he bought a dvd cleaner (£5) - used it and it solved it - So I tried it and presto mine is reading and writing fine again - I was so chuffed - need to share this simple info just in case its a simple "dust" problem for anyone else that is having reading problems. DVD cleaner not just a CD cleaner as DVD cleaners have two brushes on it.

Copy content from your DVD to the HDD (hard drive) - then copy content from HDD back to a blank disk. Will not copy protected DVD's. You can also download another intruction booklet for it from the Lite0n website.

I presume at this stage you have tried a different type of dvd disc and not just the one type and you are using the correct format dvdr for your machine. If you have tried all this it could be the laser, but make sure you try everthing else before replacing optic assy.
