Hi You can Try 2 things.

There is some foreign object blocking your cartridges carriage that disables it from moving. Generally when this happens, something has fallen into the printer, or a piece of paper has been jammed in there.

First step, remove the ink cartridge, and turn the printer upside down and gently shake it, see if anything comes out.

If nothing goes, or you can't hear anything rattling around, get a piece of cardstock paper (60lb or heavier) and gently push this through the printer, to see if it will help push out what might be stuck in there

Next try.

It may be a piece of paper or a scotch tape or a staple wire.
Solution 1:
Clean the timing strip.

Solution 2:
The purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) may be not lubricated well enough .

Lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps); this repair probably require to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism.

Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

Canon pixma MX 860.Its not printing anymore.when it tries it make a loud rattling noice and an error code 5c20 comes up. Cartgridges have been removed and put back.Dont know how to check on the printerhead

Hello.
To check the print head remove the cartridges. To the left of right of the cartridge holder there is a orange or grey lever. lift this and remove the print head. The rattling noise could also be the belt that moved the cartridge carriage back and forward. this belt is directly behind the carriage. This belt may have slipped from its wheels at each end of the printer. look inside it with a torch for a clear view. Before doing this please remove the power cord from the back of the printer to ensure your safety.
I hope this helps Regards GM

Canon MX7600 error 5100, 5C20

Yes, 5100 means the carriage is not moving back and forth properly or there is grease on the encoder strip behind the carriage assembly. Grease spots make it lose count and slam into the side and grind gears. You need to clean the strip with a Q-tip moist with alcohol, but very carefully, not too much pressure on the strip.

Soon after initiating printing, Canon s400 printer stops with a loud clunk. This produces Error 5100. Turning off and on again does not help.

Error Code 5100 This happens lots in caon
Solution 1:
Clean the timing strip.

Solution 2:

No drivers are available for the printer for Windows ME. It may be time to upgrade your computer if you want to make use of newer printers and hardware.

Loud grinding noice before starting to print

Mine makes a grinding noise when scanning or making copies. As long as everything is working, I just tolerate the noise in which the rest of the staff find amusing at first and then ignore it as I do.

ERROR 5100

Hi, Did you hear a loud crunching sound from the printer before the error code 5100 was displayed? 1. You may need to send in the unit for service. Some Cannon Service offer temporary replacement unit while working on yours. Checking and do-it-yourself inkjet printer repair is messy. 2. You can try check if the print head assembly (carriage) moves freely from left to right. Lubricate/clean if necessary (If your printer has one) check also the slit strip at the back of the carriage. This is a plastic film with multiple dark notch like mark. Clean with cotton swab and light solvent or isoprophyl alcohol. If these does not solve your problem, guess your back to # 1. Good luck and kind regards.
