Question about HP Computers & Internet

Computer only works in "safe mode".

My computer only works in "safe mode". I tried rebooting, hitting f8 and selecting "normal mode" and "last known good configuration". Neither work! It happened once before, I deleted some software I had installed, and it worked. About 2-3 weeks later, it happened again, and I can't figure out what else to do!

    1) If I may ask; what was the software that was deleted? 2) Do you have the Restoration Disk/s? If not contact HP Support. A) Using knowledge from dealing with US based support. The disk/s are free. The shipping and handling is not. $17 for a 5 to 7 day ship, $24 for a 2 to 3 day ship. Call 1-800-474-6836, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Have the Serial Number handy. This is in the white Service Tag on the back of the computer. S/N = Serial Number. For other countries use HP Support Worldwide.

The software was "Speedupmypc" and something called "winrar" that came with it. I do have the restoration disks, but don't want to use them until I'm sure of I have everything I want off of the computer. I can't restore to a particular date, as it says "restore" is not turned on.

When you use the Restoration Disk, you will be asked if you wish to save a previous installation. Might show something like 4439MB for WinXP, for example. Suggest you do it. Repair / Non-Destructive Installation. This will repair the basic Windows files, and you will have access to your personal info again. Then at this point I would suggest copying off all your personal info, reinstalling the Restoration Disk again, and this time perform a Full Install. Destructive Installation. Bring your computer back to the way it was Day 1, from the factory. Then you can reinstall whatever personal information you want.

As for 'Speedupmypc', Little House on the Prairie makes my computer faster, or Bozo the Clown loves my PC, FORGET ABOUT IT!

I, and others can show you how to speed up your computer, without that cr@p. (Excuse my language)

For one, if you repair your Windows, and then come back with a full install, (Destructive Installation), you WILL speed up your PC.

Know why?

When a Harddrive reaches 50 percent full, the computer slows down.
No secret marvel here.
When a Harddrive reaches 70 percent full, YOU start noticing it for real.

All you are doing is removing all the extra stuff you've been putting on, and bringing the computer back to when it didn't have that extra stuff.
The stuff that filled that Harddrive up.

Ordinarily when you want to speed your computer up, you look in Add/Remove Programs, and delete the programs you hardly ever use, or do not use at all.

DO NOT remove ANY Windows programs!

This makes more room on the harddrive.
Now remove all the personal stuff you could store on disks, flashdrives, or external harddrive.

Pictures, videos, music, documents you have created, documents you have downloaded; you get the picture.

The more room on the harddrive, the faster the computer.

Next we get to the Registry.

When you delete programs there are left-over fragments of files.
When you go to ANY website, there are cookies put on your harddrive.
When you delete anything from your computer, there is always fragments of files left behind.

All this is JUNK takes up room on the harddrive.

Use Defragmenter?
Doesn't work very well. DO suggest using it, but also use a Registry cleaner.

I use CCleaner.

Why?

Because;
A) It's FREE
B) It works as well as paid for registry cleaners, and better than some.

Hey, it's a free program, and no one is making any money, or other lucrative offers here.
I know every website you go to is always,
"USE THIS, it's the BEST!"

I'm just a computer geek sitting here telling you about it.
I have for 3 years on FixYa, and 5 years elsewhere.
I use it. Works very well. That's all I can tell ya.

Need guidance in downloading, installing, and using CCleaner, just post back in a Comment.

Yes. There are functions that are ONLY for advanced users.
I will guide you using the basic features, and that is all you'll need. You won't be able to mess anything up.

(NOT indicating you would, just saying you won't be able to)

Okay,.........that's about it for me. Time to collect my toys, and go home. I think I smell dinner cooking......................

Hello,

Choose Last Known Good Configuration. If that doesn't work, choose Safe Mode and then do a system restore to roll back your PC.

How to Turn Off Safe Mode on Windows Vista

The Safe Mode is used to detect the technical and software problems in windows Vista. This is an effecting way to diagnosing the problem, that's why most of the technicians prefer this way to resolve the problem. But Safe Mode disables the most of the advance functionality of your computer. So use the Safe Mode only for diagnosing the problem and as you diagnose and repair the problem get back your windows to normal mode. <br /><br />For reverting back to normal mode at windows Vista, an option occurred which has to be select within limited time and if you select the Normal Mode option within this limited time, your windows will revert back successfully but if you waste the time, you have to restart your computer again for getting this option. You can select the Normal Mode option through arrow keys or by pressing the number at which the Normal Mode will appear.<br /><br />Sometime your computer does not display the Mode Selection Menu. This is not a problem you can get this menu and revert back your windows Vista into Normal Mode through the following instructions.<br /><br />Instructions<br />If you want to revert your Windows Vista into Normal Mode from the Safe mode but your system is not giving you option to select the mode, follow the given instructions: <br /><br />Restart Your Computer: To restart the computer you need to take the following step:<br />- Click on "Start" button at the left side of Task Bar. In Safe Mode of windows Vista the Start button appears at the same place where it appears in the Normal mode. Select "Turn Off Computer" from the Start Menu. Then, Select 'Restart" from the pop-up menu.<br />When your computer has been shut down place your finger at F8 key. As your computer starts to boot computer devices for restarting your computer, press F8 key again and again unless a menu appears on the screen. This menu is Mode Selection Menu.<br /><br />Note: If your computer won't give you Mode Selection Menu at the screen that's means you have lost the time of getting option. In this condition restart your computer again and again, and then press F8. <br /><br />When you get Mode Selection Menu on your computer screen, stop pressing F8 key. Now choose the Normal Mode from the list by the following method:<br />- You can select the Normal Mode by pressing the number on which Normal Mode appears in the list.<br />- You can select the Normal Mode manually through the Arrow Keys. My HP upper keys dont work except for 56

OK, it sounds like your keyboard has been hijacked by an infection. If it works long enough for you to login then it works, but stops after windows loads because the virus also loads.

Try going into Safe Mode and see if the keyboard works. Turn off your computer, then hit the power button to turn it back on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see Safe Mode. Select Safe Mode and let it boot up. Safe Mode will look different to you because the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, this is normal. Once it boots to your desktop, try using the keyboard. Open up something like Notepad or Wordpad and hit every key to see if they work. If they work, you surely have a virus infection. Most viruses can't function in safe mode because they need a internet connection and a normal startup. if the keyboard works lets get the lil ******.

Turn off you computer again and turn it back on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see Safe Mode. This time scroll down until you see SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING. Select Safe Mode With Networking. This will give you internet connectivity. Open up your browser and download and install MalwareBytes.

Go to www.google.com and in the search box type:"Download cnet Malwarebytes" (without the quotes). Download andinstall malwarebytes from the sites download.cnet/malwarebytes. When thesite opens up click on the Green Download button on the left. Do notclick the Red Download button, that's junk. When it finishes installing the GuiInterface will open up with an offer to Accept a Trial Version orDecline. CLICK DECLINE you want the totally free version. Run aQUICK SCAN. As it scans, if it finds infections the number will be inred. When it finishes scanning, click SHOW RESULTS. A notepad textdocument will open up showing you the results. You can close the textdocument and go back to the Gui Interface where you will click REMOVE SELECTEDRESULTS. The objects will already be selected for you. When itfinishes removing the objects click ok and it will sometimes reboot yourmachine.

Forgot my laptop password

Hi
Reboot the computer. As soon as it powers on, start pressing F8. Press that about 2 times a second until you get a menu that has "Safe Mode" at the top. Select Safe Mode and when the computer boots to Windows, login as Administrator.
Go to Start > Run > type "control userpasswords2" and hit enter. From there, select your normal account and hit "Reset Password". Enter the password you want and click OK. Now you can reboot the machine normally and login with the new password. hope this help : - )

How to start in safe mode?

While the computer is initially booting up, press F8 (repeatedly if necessary), you should be presented with a selection screen to boot into safe mode (various levels such as with or without networking) or to boot normally. The F8 key only works while the computer is going through the BIOS startup procedure.

Ok the computer is on,but the screen just says loading on the bar across the screen, but it never loads and just keeps saying loading

For this issue what you need do is to check first if you can reboot the computer in Safe Mode.
Here are the steps to go to Safe Mode:
1. While your computer is starting after you turn it on press F8 continously so it will override the Normal booting procedure.
2. Select Safe Mode by using the arrow keys then hit enter.

Now if the computer cannot be rebooted in Safe Mode you need to re-install your Operating System.

You can try the following to resolve this issue:

Reboot your computer and start tapping F8, You will come across the Windows "Advance boot option" screen. On the list select "Safe Mode" using Arrow keys and press Enter. Your Computer will boot in safe mode. Select Administrator account at logon Screen.
Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System restore
On the System restore screen hit next, Select a latest Highlighted date when your computer was working fine, then hit next.
Let the computer restore. It will reboot automatically in normal mode. Once it is booted and restored properly everything should be fine.

Undoing the "safe mode"

Yes, you should be able to reboot and it should automatically go back into regular mode.

If it doesn't, upon the next reboot tap the F8 key after your computer starts. A menu should appear with safe mode and start windows normally. Select the normal option. If a "boot menu" appears, select the hard drive, press enter then immediately hit the F8 key again for that menu although it should just reboot right into regular mode.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate this solution with a fixya rating.

Safe mode business

safe mode automatically comes up when you didn't shut down properly. Just select boot as normal or last known good configuration then you are good to go.

uninstall any new hardware or software you have recently installed to cause the problem in the first place. If you haven't installed anything then windows should just start normally.

good luck
