Question about Hitachi 53UWX10B 53" Rear Projection Television

Replaced IC'S and all resistors and focus problem still

The picture looks great but the small text like game scores, advertising small words and other scrolls along the top or bottom are still out of focus. Watching a football game the up close shots are perfect but the "panned out" shots you can not read jersey numbers? After converging I press the pip button to read rom and then the pip ch. button to set the majic focus and it errors out in the red as "over flow"? It looks like the color is bleeding during this. If I push the majic focus button I can get the "static mode" 9 +'s but cannot seem to get the blue to focus crisp even using the focus knobs behind the front panel. Any words of wisdom? Thank you Troy

Hello yorty,

You are the first person I have ever had to give this advice to. Let me explain, some folks "get lucky" and the replacement of the IC's and the simple alignment are usually enough, but in your case you have landed in the magical land of complete convergence adjustment.

You are going to have to perform a static and dynamic convergence alignment of your TV. in theory its very simple. here are the instructions:

First, you will have to adjust purity of the three CRTs (follow the instructions in your users guide or the schematic of your TV)

Second, you will need to set the static convergence of your TV (This will set the center of your tv and some of the side, top and bottom, lines)

Third, Once the static convergence is done you will need to set the dynamic convergence of your tv this will set the lines of the extreme top bottom and sides of your tv.

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS IN YOUR OWNERS MANUAL OR THE SCHEMATIC FOR THIS TV!!

Now for the bad news,

These three actions are all intertwined, That means that once you adjust one, you will have to readjust the others to match. Now this means that on an average, you will spend the next 8 - 16 hours doing the adjustment (8-16 hours are the estimated times for a TV technician to perform this task).

Now, I would suggest getting a TV technician to do the alignment becuase the task is very very tedious, and even most TV technicians hate doing it. I wish you well.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

When looking at any words on the screen there is a double of the words in blue and it arches upwards. It's not jsut he words, yet this is the best way to discribe the problem.

If you try to adjust convergence with the flash focus, perfect focus, (depending on the make of your set) or by manual convergence and the lines will not line up or even move. Your symptom sounds like a damaged convergence IC.

If you want to repair this set yourself, I have some instructions below that will be a help to you.
While it is not a very hard repair, this repair can be a bit tricky. If you have a 45W soldering iron, solder, solder wick, heat sink compound, and some basic soldering skills, you can repair the television yourself.
*** VERY IMPORTANT NOTE***
If your set is not producing a clear picture and the colors are not lining up, do not continue to watch the set as this can lead to further failure and possibly damage the individual CRT’s in the set.
I have repaired hundreds of these sets, so if you have any questions after reading the following, please reply to this post and I will help you in any way that I can.

With that aside I have some support suggestions that I have put together that may help you make an informed decision.

You should be able to get a local service center to repair this at your house for between $350.00 - $450.00, If you want to repair this set yourself, I have some instructions below that will be a help to you.
While it is not a very hard repair, this repair can be a bit tricky

How do I tell if the IC’s are damaged?
Since you cannot look inside of an IC, you will have to locate some of the components in the area around the convergence IC’s. You may be able to see some resistors that have changed colors or you test a resistor and it no longer reads the value marked by the color bands or the printed value. You will have to replace the IC’s and the supporting components.

When you remove the old IC's, please be sure to remove all of the old heat sink compound, as it can act as an insulator for the new IC's and cause them to overheat. I usually clean the heat sinks with alcohol and a small rag.

Where are the IC’s located and how do I find them?
There are two and large IC’s that control the convergence in a big screen set. Some of the newer sets only have one. If you only have one, it is right in the middle of the set on the center circuit board. They are secured to a very large aluminum heat sink. They will have a part number stamped on them that will start with an STKXXX-XXX, like STK392-110.

Along with the convergence IC’s there will also be some associated components that will need to be replaced as well. There are some resistors that are part of the convergence circuit that will be open and need to be replaced. Most likely these will appear charred in the center. If you have an Ohm Meter or a DVM, check all the resistors that are close to the IC’s and you should be looking for either ones that have opened or have changed values.

If one of the convergence IC’s are found to be bad, I would replace them both, if one has gone bad the other may go soon. I usually order my parts from Andrews Electronics in California, they will have the OEM components that you will need.
Their site is
http://www.andrewselectronics.com/welcome.aspx
And their phone number is a 24-Hour Order Desk: (800) 274-4666
I recommend the phone order so you can talk to the person about the different types of IC’s that are available.

I would also advise that the convergence IC’s be OEM or better, just because they are cheap does not mean that they are a good deal. I have seen the cheap IC’s fail after a short time, even though they look exactly like the OEM IC’s. I think that the bottom line is that you will get what you pay for when it comes to the parts.

You can also try
http://www.tvrepairkits.com/ , they do carry OEM or better parts. When you order from them you will get a kit with instructions on how to do the repair, step-by-step.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.
If you need further assistance please comment to this post and I will try to help you further.

I have attached some photos of really bad convergence problems; your picture may not be exactly as bad as these.

As per statement, "the magic focus works great, the colors are bright and aligned" it means the tubes are working ..you need feed a signal to see the picture...the tv video goes muted without signal

John, Hitachi site is down at the moment, if you remove the clips on the front of the IC`s you will see the numbers of the convergence ic`s, and yes they are a pain to get out, they are probably stk 392-110`s if they are the originals, you`ll have to un-solder 36 pins total to get them out, check for burnt resistors in the general area of the ic`s and replace any that are burnt before turning the set on,be sure to order a tube of "heat sink compound" to apply to the back of the new IC`s, once on the set will probably still look poor, this is normal, run the set for minimum of 15 minutes then push the " magic focus button " inside the front door panel, after it has finished running magic focus it should look great, video-tek

Only get red screen

Hello,

First of all Check Flash focus is working or not?(Flash focus should finish 1 full cycle)
If Flash focus not working you will have a error code in your screen.
If any error message or wont compelte full cycle you have problem with convergence amplifier IC
It could be one of your IC bad along with Couple of small Value resistor.

Dont Forget to Rate!!

Good Luck

Double check your work for errors such as solder bridges or incorrect resistor placement. Look carefully anywhere solder could have dripped or splattered to cause the bowing. If you entered the digital convergence mode to touch it up, you will have to re initialize the magic focus for it to function. Good luck

Majic focus code gave me a five

Barb, thats a code for convergence error, the convergence circuit has failed, the IC`s will have to be replaced and may have 1 or 2 resistors burnt, this is not a job for a "layperson", board has to be removed, IC`s and possibly resistors un-soldered , removed and new ones re-soldered in, requires accurate voltmeter, soldering equipment and the ability to solder very small joints, I`d advise you to call a tv tech for this one, hope this helped, BMW Rider

the convergence IC`s and associated resistors have to be replaced, do not repeatedly push magic focus or the alignment after the parts change out will take longer which of course means higher repair bill, good luck
