Question about Kenmore 24032\24036 Top Load Washer

Open Question

I have a KENMORE WASHER 110.28882790. I turn the timer dial to the setting and pull the knob and NOTHING happens. what does happen is u can hear the water inlet valve humming. the washer just stopped. it was full of water with clothes. I took the clothes out and wet vac the water out. I've had this washer apart for the drive coupler twice so i familiar with whats what. I am very handy so I dont want to call a repair man. when i did empty it and tried to start it the water did pump into the washer. but when it was full all u can hear is the water inlet valve. i also put an ohm meter on the motor it seems to check out fine and the starter cap also checked out fine .Also the breaker has tripped in the past., While i have been doing the last couple of tests it has popped to! but not saying it could still be one of those two things. or is it the TIMER? well i probably repeated myself but i hope i made it clear what my problem is!!! I HOPE U CAN HELP ME! Thanks Mike

SOURCE: Kenmore 22956 top loader quit running after agite cycle

If the timer cycles your lid switch is ok.
most likely: motor Switch (on Motor), condenser next to motor, motor itself, or wiring going from the time to the switch,

It is probably cost efficient to replace the unit rather than trowing parts at it .

SOURCE: Kenmore 70 Series Washing Machine Drains, But Won't Spin

Yes sir, a bad motor coupler could cause the machine not to spin. You did the right thing in checking out the lid switch and the pump first. It sounds as if the motor coupling is worn and may be slipping. I will attach a link to a video that may assist you. Hope this helps and best wishes.

SOURCE: machine will not work, motor hums

It appears your motor/motor controller has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

SOURCE: We used your solution to

The problem with your washer is you need to replace the brake pads, brake cam, and the clutch assembly on your washer. Over time the cam will not totally release the brake and it will cause the pads to drag (that is what your smelling) and not come up to the operating condition and in turn, since the pads are dragging, it will also cause the clutch assembly to become worn. Replacing the brake and clutch assembly's will take care of your problem and since you replaced the motor coupler, your machine will have had a complete overhaul of the agitate and spin assembly. If you could please post your model number, I will be able to direct you to the parts you need and the repair process.

I pull the knob to do a regular wash and nothing happens, no water no agitation. However, when I turn the knob to rinse it that works. This suddenly happened, was working before. Is it the knob?

Rinse on most washers is cold water your wash cycles can be cold hot and even warm. Problem You may have is a bad water feed valve Or Timer and possible bad wire harness at motor to timer
check water valve Turn washer to regular wash cycle pull knob on will washer fill ?
if water starts to fill then change washer temp if washer has this.
if water comes out on all settings water valve is fine.
Check the water both hot and cold that it is turned on;at faucet.
Your Kenmore Most likely has a bad water valve check for hot water side clog or not working.

Stopped operating after filled with water for rinse

Have you tried moving the timer dial to other settings? will it work then? if not I would suspect a bad timer. If you are hearing the motor try and run but nothing else is happining you might want to have the couling to the motor and transmission checked out, these are common problems with these washers. Can you move the drum around freely? If you were hearing a grinding noise before this happened I would suspect the coupling, if not I would start with the timer.

Control knob will not turn to desired setting

the timer knob has a clip that will allow you to remove the knob from the timer. it is between the knob and the dial. what happens is the knob has gear like teeth that will become stripped out.it is easy to replace but alittle hard to remove. you need to get a small screwdriver and go behind the knob, pull on it alittle and you will see the clip, then use the screwdriver to push the clip out of the knob, then the knob will pull of and you can replace it.
