The Craftsman Lawn Tractor Model # 917.237100 has avariable speed hydralic transaxel. The manual and Sears parts list a screw on filter (Expensive $30 plus) for the hydraulic part of the trans axel. Which should be changed as part of normal O&M. Neither the manual nor the Sears answer dept CANNOT provide guidence as how to refill the lost Hydraulic oil, how much, or what type oil should be put back into the transmission. Sears does list the Grease for the geared differential but nothing for the Hyd oil.

SOURCE: How do I chamnge the oil in my Craftsman lawn

There should be a pipe OR quick release valve coming out the right side at the bottom of the engine where it bolts to the frame. Most of the Craftsman riders I have worked on, had a long pipe with an elbow at the end of it and a plug in the bottom of the elbow for draining. Turn the wheels all the way to the left to allow enough room for a collection pan. It holds less than 2 quarts so the pan doesn't need to be too large

SOURCE: Loss of drive in a Craftsman Lawn tractor

I also have a Craftsman tractor with the same problem. Sears repairman said it needed a new transmission and it would cost $1,400 to install. A new one is about $1,000. Anyway, if you remove the battery and the battery tray under the seat it will expose the transmission fill hole (hex). I opened the top and it looked empty. I had a bottle of 90 weight gear oil in my shop and filled the transmission to the top. I have not had any problems with it since. $4.00 bottle of oil verses a new tractor is worth a try.

WHAT LUBE GOES IN TRANSAXEL

I believe that's a tecumseh trans axle. They really aren't a serviceable part. But it you're brave... Yeah I've torn them apart to replace bearings and such. I never found a "spec" for the lube but it's really heavy. I used a nice sticky molly grease when ever I put one back together.

WHAT TYPE OF OIL DO I USE ON MY TRANSAXLE MOD 917.273080

Hydrogear transaxels take a multi grade oil 20-50 the filler is a brass plug on the top, there should be a 1/4" air gap at the top to allow for expasion, Tuff Torq units also take a multi grade oil 10-30, these units normally have a resevoir on the top with upper and lower fill marks.

Hi, I have a Craftsman Garden Tractor 18HP Twin, model mo. 917.255919 that has a transaxle leak. The transaxle takes about 5 quarts of SAE 30 Motor Oil. I took the transaxle apart last summer to fix a gear...

I would drain transaxel out and refill with 80w90 gear oil. I think the 30 w is way to thin. You can try some lucas trasmisson sealer and conditioner and see if that helps.
If you have to remove the transaxel I would use hi-temp silicon sealer to seal all seams and arou
nd axel shafts. I have a six year old craftsman garden tractor 18 h.p. twin mod.number 917.2722751 and I'm nearly sure it uses the same transaxel so if you do have to get into the transaxel the oil seal part number is 788088A.I can not find the suggested quanity of oil but I just fill to top thru oil fill plug on top front of transaxel.Hope this helps you. Thanks

Changing the oil filter on a lawn tractor

If it is a screw on type oil filter, apply a film of oil on seal, then screw on. If you want to, go ahead and pour some oil in the filter, in my opinion the oil will circulate faster if there is some oil already in the filter.
